Mookie Manor
Steve Clark's Home In London

"You gotta love a guy who buys a house in London with a plaster cow's head on it and calls it 'Mookie Manor'"
- Peter Mensch

Steve bought his beautiful old house in Chelsea, London in the late 1980's. It is a part of a complex that used to be an old dairy, which is an unusual set of buildings to say the least (it's not every day that you see something adorned with plaster cow heads!). Steve named his house Mookie Manor, after Mookie Wilson (of the NY Mets) and the cow.
Steve had always wanted an old house with enough room for his own studio and that's what he got when he purchased this, which happens to be in the oldest street in the Chelsea area. To the left is a photo of the plaster cow head that adorns the main part of the old dairy and below are other parts of the complex. This part of the dairy is set back from the street and there is, from what I could see, a little courtyard type area in front of it (I didn't feel it was right to go looking around in there).
Below are some more photographs so you can see the other plaster cow head and the beautiful buildings that were once a part of the dairy. (There's a note below regarding the privacy of the current occupants of Steve's home).

I think that Steve's house is a lovely old building steeped in history (highly appropriate given his interests) but it now has a very sad history as this is where he left us.

In the early hours of January 8th 1991, Steve passed away in his sleep at Mookie Manor, aged only 30 years old. He was found by his American girlfriend, Janie, after she had gone to bed the previous night without bothering to check on him.

That winter morning, the world lost it's most gifted musician and most remarkable man... but he found peace at long last.

I personally found it difficult going to see Steve's old home knowing what happened there and it took me some time before I was ready to visit. I knew that his old local pub - The Front Page - was close, but until you are actually there, in that street, you don't realise that "a few feet from Steve's front door" literally means that. That hit me hard. I would like to think that he had happy times is his Mookie Manor Chelsea home as well as the sad ones, but at the time that he bought this there was a lot going on his life.

Out of respect for the privacy of the current occupants of Steve's old home, I will not disclose exactly which one of these houses was Steve's. (I know which one it is because of something I have had for a while, and rest assured it does feature on this page). If you think that that's unfair, please think for a moment whether you would be happy for vast amounts of fans to be looking around outside your home. I felt a little uncomfortable taking photos there myself.

These are my own personal photographs, which I own the copyright to. Please respect my wishes and don't take them from here. Thanks.

Last but definitely not least: This page wouldn't exist without the enormous help of someone close to me because without them and their encouragement (and copious amounts of meds!) I couldn't have coped with the visit (London, depression and anxiety really don't mix well). Thank you so much.
