This would came to mind after I passed two guys on the sidewalk. The first was a collegiate type telling his friend that he was free all afternoon. He Had "Nowhere to go and nothing to do" The second guy was this fellow.
He's footloose and fancy-free
An April day watching clouds in the park
Catches a high school baseball game before he sacks out
He's got nowhere to go and nothing to do.
It's May now and he picks flowers
Gives them to the lady in the library
Watches people hugging at the train station
He's got nowhere to go and nothing to do.
In June, he kills a day in the park
Watches squirrels chasing each other
Lays on his back, looks up at the sun through the trees
He's got nowhere to go and nothing to do.
July, he watches the fireworks
Thinks about what his country means to him
Falls asleep under the stars
He's got nowhere to go and nothing to do.
In August he beats the heat down at the river
Splashes in the waves
Watches a sunset over the downtown buildings
He's got nowhere to go and nothing to do.
September now, leaves are turning early
Watches the wind sweep the streets clean
Talks to people hurrying to their homes
He's got nowhere to go and nothing to do.
December, cold and alone on the street
He's got a cough and he hasn't slept right in a month
The shelter is full and the soup's all gone
He's got nowhere to go and there's nothing to do.
