Pheasant Hollow Farm

  West Virginia
This is the Home Page of Pheasant Hollow Farm of West Virginia. This property, was once known as the Blackwater Farm Zoological Park, in Slate, West Virginia. What now remains on this 15 acre site, are  barns, cages, and numerous corrals. This property also has trails that lead to 4 ponds that have fish and bull frogs.

Early mornings, while sitting on the back deck, you can see the Canadian Geese fly into the far back pond. You can also hear the wild Tom Turkey's gobble for their hens. The Whitetail deer that come down the side of the mountain are also frequent guests.

Being from Long Island, New York, married and 3 wonderful children and a beautiful granddaughter, I felt it was time to move on in life. By the way, I am now 51 years old. So I guess I can do this.

I will have to say that West Virginia, is, by far, one of the most beautiful states that I have ever seen. Fresh air, mountains, fields, rivers and lakes. The people here have a different way of life. The crime rate is low, and people respect each other. The home I had, on Long Island, New York, was a moderate 3 bedroom home with a fireplace and a detatched gararge. The property was located on a lot that was 67' x 117' small. But this is what we had in the town of Bayshore. Property taxes were high.. But not as high as others. We paid $5000.00 a year. I guess you can say thats crazy. You see when your income is $70,000.00 a year, the goverment in NY, feels that you can pay more for the programs that you don't need. I had a good job, I am a Printer/Pressmen of 29 years, my wife is a US Goverment employee. The jobs down in West Virginia are far and few. On the other hand, my wife was able to get a job transfer. So, now we are down to one income, what do we do?????

Since I am an avid hunter, bow, gun, big game and small game. I have also hunted  upland game birds for over 30 years. I really enjoyed the brisk mornings with my German Shorthair Pointer, going Pheasant hunting. My dogs get so excited when I put on my orange blazed hunting  jacket. I just can't seem to sneek out of the house. In NY, they had a Ringneck Pheasant Stocking Program on Long Island, So on November 1st. we would go out to the fields and woods to get this radiant bird. By the way, the daily limit on Long Island, NY was four(4) birds per day, either sex and a season limit of thirty (30) birds per year. Not to bad. I always had my freezer full.

Well here I am, in West Virginia, no job and
No Ringneck Pheasants to hunt. Fall comes around and the leaves have all turned color and the dogs want to hunt. We go out and come back  home, with nothing. Dogs are depressed and I am ready to move back to NY.

So, now, since I have all this land with fields and woods and all the barns and corrals, I inquire about raising the Ringneck Pheasant. First I have to get a business license and a importation permit if the pheasants come from out of state. Well there isn't anyone here that sells pheasants. You see, if I wanted to buy pheasants to release here, on my property,
no licence required, but since there are no vendors here I would have to purchase out of state. License is now required.

I now have my license, I have ordered my pheasants and have the importation permit on hand. When the baby chicks arrive, I have to take another form to the DNR, and then, I get my permit to operate a game bird farm. All this for a sport that I so much enjoy.

Please take the time to visit my other site which tells about my plans for the future at Pheasant Hollow Farm.
