My frustrations, as they happen (just about)

Friday 7th March

School email is down, because it was never configured correctly. Head of IT forgot to disable Windows 2000's SMTP server, which now gets all emails and rejects them, while the real SMTP server listens on another port. Nice one.

Note to pupils If you were expecting Amazon vouchers at your school email address, there is no guarantee that you will ever get them. You will only get them if they are re-sent.

Details of my possible temporary fix for this are here.

Monday 3rd February 2003

Just fixed another dead computer in school, my friend reported the repair, having previously reported the fault, and was then engaged in a "why did you try yourself" conversation. Two minor issues being that it was me that fixed it not him, and that I was helping them anyway.

School network is in trouble again, this time it's the three main servers with unpatched IIS servers and our old friend Nimda. Ooops...

10:51 - Have shown Head of IT how to shut down the HTTP Daemon. Also shut down unnecessary SMTP and FTP Daemons.

11:30 - Another server running unpatched IIS... The one with pupil data and SIMS on it. Apparently it isn't the responsibility of Head of IT, and it runs antivirus, so it doesn't need to be secured. Great... how does that protect the pupil data from hackers?

BT Openworld are annoying me again... They block all inbound traffic to TCP port 25, so I can't run a mail server properly.

Thursday 16th January 2003

The Head of IT can't figure out why the internet doesn't work. He either doesn't realise or doesn't know how to correct that there is no DNS entry for the proxy server.

12:40 - He's now fixed it after I told him what to do.
