How I set up my laptop with an Avaya Silver ETS card and Red Hat Linux 7.1

This is actually quite simple, but I couldn't find anywhere that told me how to do this simply.

Here is how to do it, in 5 steps:

  • Put your Avaya Silver Card into your laptop
  • Install Red Hat Linux 7.1 (make sure you have PCMCIA support)
  • Edit the file /etc/pcmcia/wireless.opts (more details below)
  • Configure the interface using the normal tools
  • Walk into range of the other wireless devices. It *should* work

In the wireless.opts file, you need to change the first section in the file after all the comments at the top. It should be relatively self explanatory.

Warning: Be careful... I tested this with the wireless access points at my school, at 2300 on a Friday night. Though this is a relatively normal thing for me to do, police officers seemed to think I was suspicious because I wasn't at the pub instead.
