Mark Twain was born in Samuel Clemens in Florida, Missouri in 1835.  He moved to the Mississippi port of Hannibal when he was 4 years old and worked as a printer and silver miner before moving into journalism, where he adopted his pseudonym.. His most famous works, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, recall his boyhood times..

Twain visited England many times, but his final trip in 1907 showed how much he was appreciated. He stayed at the Adlephi Hotel and was guest of honour at a banquet to celebrate Liverpool's 700th birthday. H also received an honorary doctorate from Oxford University and whilst in Liverpool, he also found time to lecture at Liverpool Institute.
