Clerks

Collectors Edition DVD

1994

Director: Kevin Smith

Brian O'Halloran, Jeff Anderson

"I'm not even supposed to be here today"! At last Kevin Smith's 'no budget' classic Clerks has hit DVD and this is one disc that you'll want to watch again and again.

Dante is an unhappy shop assistant who has to come in on his day off and spends the rest of the day with his buddy Randall (who should be running the next-door video shop) while trying to make-up with his ex-girlfriend and deal with rude customers and Randall's disregard to customer services.

Clerks is an excellent dialogue driven piece of movie making that puts it's contemporaries to shame with it's take on shop life and the reality of working within the environment. With the customers being the antagonist it makes for some interesting humor.

Now this is not a movie for the easily offended as the humor at times finds the boundaries of taste and jumps right over them. But, anyone who has ever been a 'mop jockey' in one of these places will relate to Dante and the situation that he is in.

Credit must go out to Kevin Smith for creating a drug dealer and his heavy (Jay and Silent Bob)who are actually likeable opposed to the villains of the piece. Jay and Silent Bob play an important piece in this movie just as they do in the rest of the New Jersey series which Clerks is part 1 of .

Highlights include a speech about whether the Rebels were right to blow up the Death Star in Return of the Jedi and a Hockey Game on the roof of the convenience store where Dante works and some interesting sexual acts that are described in detail or referenced to.

Overall this is a movie that should be added to any self-respecting DVD collection.

EXTRAS:

Scene selection, Theatrical Trailer, Alternative Ending, Deleted Scenes, Audio commentary by Kevin Smith and members of the cast and crew, Soul Asylum music video.

A case of quality over quantity and to be honest I cannot think of what else you would want from this movie! The Soul Asylum video is excellent while the audio commentary featuring a drunk Jason Mewes (Jay) is hysterical! Kevin Smith and co. provide an interesting and humorous commentary. The deleted scenes are good, while the alternative ending is different and more downbeat than the ending used in the movie.

RATINGS:

Movie:***** A brilliant piece of film making.

Extras:**** Good stuff for a Lazerdisc conversion!
