Telling it as it is!
My Thoughts!
For the past few months I have used this column to express my opinions on the news events that have interested me, be they 'real' news, entertainment or sport.
To do this column daily full time on a newspaper, magazine, website or any other format would be a dream come true!
So why have I dedicated this column to myself rather than continue my weekly look at the news?
Essentially there is only so much I can write about the so called 'war on terrorism' as I find it not to be boring but hypocritical! The notes that I made over the past week for this column were in all honesty not that good or interesting. So its a first for me to scrap a column!
I have no love or interest in a war against Afghanistan! I believe that the Americans are right to track down Bin Laden and that the Taliban regime should be overthrown, but, I also believe that this is not Britain's war!
America never seemed to care when we were under attack by terrorists over the Northern Ireland situation. A minority actually supported the IRA so why should we jump into a war that is not our concern?
The only reason that I can think of is because former President Bill Clinton did do a lot for Northern Ireland. His successor on the other hand wanted to segregate America from the rest of the world prior to the attacks, so if we are going to enter a war we should do it for Bill and not for Bush!
This aside I have been working long hours at a certain 'ass tapping' supermarket doing overtime that I do not want to do!
Now, don't get me wrong I am not afraid of hard work its just that I would rather spend my time working on my writing and looking for new employment. I am currently working in an environment where if you are a winner they will do the best to break your spirits and turn you into a loser.
I always remember the line "Winner suck losers dry" from the film Heathers. After working at said store I think that it is wrong!
It is the losers that suck the winners dry!
When I was working at the superstore on weekends as well as going college then later Uni I could spend the 20 hours a week thinking about essays and projects to keep me going! Now I have only this website and the eternal hope that I find a real job.
If you ever want to work in a store make sure you never use any long words, don't tell them that you want to go to Uni or are interested in anything remotely intellectual. Always use the words f**k, f**king, c**t etc. to emphasize your self. Be racist, be homophobic and consider soap operas to be the height of intelligent viewing (especially if you are working on fresh meat!).
I am a Vegetarian, REM fan, Graduate and I like films that make you think and I currently have blue hair (a Jane Wiedlin thing, if you check out my profile you will see why)!
If I break this down as to some of the comments I get on a regular basis:
"F**kin' Veggie eat some meat". I was thin before I became Vegetarian and after working in a butchery I will never eat meat again.
"REM are a bunch of f**kin queers (Michael Stipe is gay yet the rest are married) so you must be queer" I'm not, but like Michael Stipe why should I explain myself as there is no shame in it!
"F**kin students we paid for you through our taxes". I worked all the time I was at college and Uni and still racked up over £4,000 in student loans. And I was earning to much to be exempt from paying tax. All this and I wish that they would get it through their thick skulls that I am a graduate not a student.
"Your hair makes you look like a peacock no I mean cock". I get this on a daily basis from one of the morons on the meat dept. and he still finds it funny (originality is not his strong point). The interesting thing is that I have been given very positive comments from near enough everyone else on other departments and from the shoppers.
I always remember one of my colleagues telling me "You won't know what has hit you when you hit the real world!".
Well if the store is what they call the real world then they have a sad and boring life. I was physically and mentally drained when I came home from Uni at the weekends (hence an addiction to wrestling which is the best way in the world to switch the brain off!).
Now after working in their real world for three years I would love the stress, using my brain 24-7, pulling all-nighters, working my butt-off to complete a essay, magazine, script or video. If working in a store is hard work then what would they think of college or Uni.
Now I hope I don't sound anti-social, far from it, outisde of the meat dept. I am known as an all round hardworker and Mr nice guy and in all honesty it is no shame that those I work with on a daily basis do not see this.
I believe that in life you are given a station and it is up to you to improve that station and as long as I am healthy this column will continue and I will be published.
Thank you for visiting my site and reading my column.
