Still telling it as it is!
Vanilla Sky
Dir: Cameron Crowe
Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz, Jason Lee
Tom Cruise has made great movies (Jerry Maguire, Rain Man, Born on the 4th July Top Gun) Good Films (Mission Impossible) Bad Films (Days of Thunder) and now he's made shite films (Vanilla Sky)!
If you are looking for a movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat form start to finish and a twist that makes you think, then Vanilla Sky is not it!
I so wanted to like this movie, but, even with the talents of Cameron Diaz, Jason (Chasing Amy) Lee as well as Tom Cruise's new squeeze Penelope Cruz Vanilla Sky fails to be anything more than a star-vehicle for the diminutive Cruise.
When New York publisher (Cruise) falls for Dancer (Cruz) jealous ex (Diaz) drives Cruise and herself off a bridge killing herself and disfiguring Cruise.
Set between dreams a reality as well as a prison (where Cruise is being psychologically evaluated and accused of murder) the plot unfolds and makes little sense as it goes along. It feels as if they are making it up as they go along with an ending that is more of a let down than anything.
The tedium of this film would have been forgiven had the end twist been any good, but sadly no second viewing would make this film any better!
The incredible Cameron Diaz is wasted in this trash. An A list actress playing second fiddle to Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz just didn't hold right.
Rating:** A below average offering from Crowe and Cruise
