Still telling it as it is!
Alternative comedy lost one of its guiding lights this week as the last of the Goons passed away.
Spike Milligan, with pals Harry Secombe, Michael Bentine and Peter Sellers reinvented comedy with their Goons Radio show, a forerunner to the alternative comedy movement and inspiration to the likes of Monty Pythons Flying Circus, The Young Ones, Not the 9 O'clock news, Blackadder and Vic Reeves to name just a few.
Milligan was a rare comedy talent that stretched the boundaries of comedy and brought surrealistic humor to the forefront!
He may be gone but his part in the history of contemporary comedy will always be remembered!
Ocean's Eleven
Only one word can sum up Steven Soderbergh's re-imagining of Rat-pack flick Ocean's Eleven, COOL!
With an all star cast headed by George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon and Andy Garcia, Ocean's 11 is one of the most enjoyable films to come out of Hollywood in years.
With no violence, little swearing, a great soundtrack and a cast that most directors wish they could have, Ocean's 11 should be used as a blue print on how to make real movies!
When Danny Ocean (Clooney) sets out to rob three casinos at once he recruits eleven of the best and they go to work.
Okay, so the plot is predictable, as is the ending, but who cares, this is one of those movies that makes you feel good and goes out to bring back the golden era of cinema.
What sets aside Ocean's 11 from most of it's contemporaries is the way in which none of the A-llist stars blow each other of of the screen, as Tom Cruise did in the awful Vanilla Sky.
This is a true ensemble cast and with Julia Roberts in a supporting role as opposed to the lead it was great to see that there are some big names whose egos are in check.
This is a pure pleasure to watch and I cannot wait for the DVD!
Rating:***** Bets film so for of 2002!
Sir Alex signs
After promising to resign all year, Sir Alex Ferguson re-signed to Manchester United for another three years!
Not that I have anything against Sir Alex, his record speaks for itself, but, with him still around, it looks as if the other Managers in the Premiership need to work a little harder to keep their jobs and to attain the silverware that Manchester seems to be accumulating at Old Trafford!
Roswell crashes down
Sad news reached me this week that Roswell look unlikely to reach a fourth season!
Okay, I admit I am the minority who watch and will miss this series (the reason it's being canceled) but Roswell is genuinely one of the best written sci-fi drama since that other great Quantum Leap!
