God Bless the Go-Go's
Import CD Review
After
eleven years of reforming and breaking up, The Go-Go's have recorded their
first full studio album in seventeen years!
If there was ever an album to be the soundtrack of the summer then this is it!
From the thunderous La la Land to the mellow autobiographical Daisy Chain this is the mothers of 'Pretty Punk' at their best!
Belinda Carlisle rocks out old school and makes you forget that she was the nice girl of pop and with Jane Wiedlin dominating the backing vocals this is how women in rock do it right!
Tracks Rated:
La La Land This track is one that should be played loud and is an incredible opener to a near faultless CD. Across between We got the beat and The Whole World lost it's head! 8
Unforgiven An incredible play on words "My thanksgiving came the day I saw it was okay to Unforgive you! Written by Jane Wiedlin Charlotte Caffey and Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong this song could have came from the Go-Go's 1981 Beauty and the Beat! Pure class: 9
Apology After a thunderous start the girls slow down with Apology, a track that shows the Go-Go's light side. Not a classic and would not have been out of place on 1984s Talk Show. This is the closest track you'll find to Belinda's solo efforts!
Stuck in my Car Pure and unadulterated Caffey/Wieldin class. This is THE song for the summer! This rocks so bad with incredible vocals and lyrics. It cannot but help to draw you back to a time where music was music! 10
Vision of Nowness As much as I hate to disrespect anything written by Kathy 'Delphines' Valentine this is a very mediocre offering! 5
Here you are Another Belinda oriented track! This really does little, very Mercenary! 4
Automatic Rainy Day Very He's so strange from the guitar through to the drums! Kathy Valentine works the an incredible Bass line while Belinda's vocals are perfect. 8
Kissing Asphalt Pure brilliance, great word play and with Jane giving some of her best backing vocals on the CD this is without a doubt a Charlotte Caffey classic! 9
Insincere After rocking out with Kissing Asphalt the girls come back down to earth with an anthem for anyone who's been treated bad by a lover! 7
Superslide This is what happens when you put the minds of all 5 of the girls together! A flawless track that is a "21st century Cool". 7
Throw me a curve If there is any justice this will be a single and it will top the chart for a long while! This is pure Go-Go's heaven! A swipe at the model industry and their use of the wafer thin models. With lyrics like "Clothes hanger lollipop" I cannot fault this track. 10
Talking myself down Another relationship track that hits the spot. Nothing original here, but hey, it's nice! 5
Daisy Chain Kathy Valentine and Jane Wieldin have written the Go-Go's definitive ballad. Telling the story of the Go-Go's from conception to the 1984 split this is a moving track acoustic that is nothing short of incredible 11 (point added for the their ability to move a cynic like myself)
