Mallrats DVD

1995

Director: Kevin Smith

Ben Affleck, Jason Lee, Jeremy London, Jason Mewes, Joey Lauren Adams, Shannen Doherty

I love this movie!

Mallrats or if you believe their 'on DVD' documentary the "Smart Porky's" is the underestimated sequel to Kevin Smith's 1994 slacker movie Clerks.

Simple story. Two buddies Ts (London) and Brodie (Lee) are 'dumped' by their girlfriends, spend all day in the mall and attempt to win them back while discussing comic books, video games, and destroying a Game Show being filmed in the mall.

All this while indulging in a bit of topless fortune telling and avoiding Security Guards and the Manager of the Fashionable Male clothes store (Affleck). As usual, with all Kevin Smith movies Jay and Silent Bob (Mewes and Smith) are along for the ride, only this time Silent Bob is more interested in mastering the Jedi mind trick than anything else.

This movie will appeal to anyone who finds teen movies like Porky's and American Pie funny. The only difference from the aforementioned is that Mallrats is even funnier on repeat viewing due to many of the subtle in jokes and references to characters in it's prequel and sequels (Clerk, Chasing Amy, Dogma).

Highlights of the movie include Jay and Silent Bob's incident with an Easter Bunny, and Brodie with a chocolate covered pretzels. While for performance Ben Affleck and Jason Lee shine, especially in their scenes together.

EXTRAS

For extras this has to be the ultimate DVD.

If there is a template for how to fill one of these things then Mallrats is it. For a single DVD the extras include over an hour of cut scenes (with introductions), a Kevin Smith music video, making of mallrats, full commentary track with on-screen video of Smith, Affleck, Lee, Mewes and Co. talking about the movie.

The commentary track on this disc cannot be beat as Smith and co. talk with such passion and humour about a movie that was cinematic bomb and make reference to it's lack of critical and commercial credibility.

While highlights of the deleted scenes include a subplot cut from the movie and Ben Affleck in a dress!

RATING:

Movie: **** One of Jay and Silent Bob's best outings.

Extras: ***** This is how to fill a DVD. Snoogans.
