Anyway ... from here it was on to Timberline Lodge ...

You may recognize this handsome structure (although the snow tunnel doesn't really do much for the appearance) as the hotel in "The Shining." It was built by WPA (Work Progress Administration) artisans and completed in 1937. It took three months just to clear the road to get to the site! Although you can't see them very well in this picture, all the stone, used on the exterior and throughout the interior, were hauled in from the surrounding area, as was all the timber. As impressive as the exterior is, the interior is absolutely magnificent ...

Wouldn't you just love to cozy up to a fire in this lobby? (I just love this picture!) The fireplace is actually three-sided ... I wish there had been a fire going while we were there, it was rather chilly at this altitude ... as the name implies, the Lodge is at the timber line of Mt. Hood. Can you see the hand carving on the timbers over the archways?  All of the furniture throughout was designed and hand-built especially for the Lodge, as was all of the iron-work (andirons, lamps, etc.). Even the fabrics and rugs were hand-made ... one of the looms used is to the left.

I caught Steve "trying on" a replica of the chair made especially for President Franklin D. Roosevelt when he dedicated the Lodge.
