Air Canada has nade a proposal to purchase Canadian Airlines. The results of a successful transaction would be: - The purchase of the international routes currently operated by or designated to Canadian Airlines, along with certain associated assets and liabilities; - Code-sharing opportunities for Canadian Airlines on Air Canada international routes; - The maintenance of domestic air competition, with the continued participation of Canadian Airlines; - Continued availability of the Star Alliance and OneWorld networks for Canadian consumers; - The liquidity that Canadian Airlines is seeking; - Retention of Canadian Airlines' head office in Calgary; - Substantial retention of employment for Canadian Airlines staff, including the hiring by Air Canada of certain Canadian Airlines employees associated with international operations. |

Air Canada has abandoned its code share with Korean Air following the recent crash of one of Korean Air's cargo aircraft which killed nine people. Air Canada will now be offering only three flights per week to/from Seoul. Air Canada had previously placed its code on five additional weekly Korean Air flights to/from Seoul. Eva Air is looking forward to increasing flight frequency between Vancouver and Taipei at the earliest opportunity, and to adding another Canadian destination, such as Toronto. Overall Traffic at Vancouver Int Airport was up 7.9% in the month of March. Year-to-date overall traffic is up 6.4% from 3,346,801 to 3,561,638 over the same period in 1998. Due to its limited fleet, Mandarin will use of one China Airlines Ltd. B747-400 aircraft, in China Airlines livery, so that Mandarin could increase its frequency to daily service between Vancouver and Taipei from June 27, 1999 to October 30, 1999. |

Continental Airlines will be increasing its YVR-Houston service from daily to double daily from May 20 through September 10, 1999. EVA Air will launch its service on June 2, 1999 with three Boeing 747 non-stop flights a week between Vancouver and Taipei. Effective July 5, Air Canada will launch three non-stop Airbus A340 flights on the route. Canadian Airlines will begin codesharing with Alaska Airlines and Horizon Airlines on April 4th. It will also add Vancouver-London (Heathrow) service June 16 - October 22nd. Canadian Regional will drop service to Campbell River, Comox, Portland and Seattle. The Vancouver Island services will be replaced by Pacific Coastal, while the Portland and Seattle service will be replaced by Horizon Airlines. Central Mountain Air will cease service from Vancouver - Victoria on April 1st. Trans World Airlines will begin seasonal service between Vancouver, British Columbia, and TWA's hub at Lambert/St. Louis International Airport, effective May 15th. St. Louis-Vancouver nonstop service will operate through October 31st. Departures: TW 590 YVR-STL 1205P M80 Arrivals: TW 589 STL-YVR 1115A M80 Westjet will add twice weekly Vancouver-Las Vegas charters on April 15th. |

Air Canada retired its remaining Boeing 747 'Classic's' from its active fleet during January. Air Transat took delivery yesterday (Feb 23rd) of their first of two A330-200s from Airbus Industrie in Toulouse. The aircraft was flown to Mirabel. Another A330-200 will join Air Transat's fleet in April. Air Transat intends to use the A330s on trans-atlantic routes this summer and peak southern routes next winter. Alaska Airlines will add April 25th - September 11 Vancouver-Seattle service. America West Airlines is adding a second daily YVR-PHX service on May 2nd. Canadian Airlines will be dropping their non-stop service from Vancouver to San Diego on April 3rd. The twice daily 737s have operated all winter with code-sharing by Reno Air and American Airlines. Canadian Regional also ceased service on its YVR-SJC and YVR-LAS routes. Canadian Airlines and Japan Airlines announced a significantly enhanced codeshare agreement, allowing expansion from two to four flights daily between Tokyo and Vancouver, starting April 4, 1999. Canadian Airlines intends to expand their Vancouver hub this spring to include two daily international of flights and with the increased service to/from Japan will offer passengers more choice of connecting flights to points in Canada. CAI will also use Tokyo Nartia's Terminal 2 with JAL allowing for better and quicker connections to JAL's domestic network and other routes in Asia. Korean Airlines will increase service on its YVR-SEL service from twice weekly to thrice weekly on March 28th. The new service is on Sundays and will continue to utilize the Boeing 777. Pacific Coastal added service to Comox on December 30th with a Vancouver-Campbell River-Comox-Vancouver service. Reno Air will drop its daily YVR-Reno service on April 18th. United Airlines will to be adding a third daily service to Chicago starting Jun 30th. The service will be utilizing an A320. |

Air BC has been operating two aircraft with special Rudolph markings, and they a/c are C-FADK and C-FADJ. Air Canada has been granted approval to operate 3 weekly YVR-TPE service. No information has yet been provided on when the service will begin. A Canadian Airlines Boeing 747 landed at YVR for the introduction of Canadian's New Livery with a Stylized Goose on the tail. Continental Airlines has changed some of the flight times for its service from YVR. The two new services to IAH and EWR schedules to begin June 10th and will be on Boeing 737-700's. Effective January 8, 1999, Malaysia Airlines will cease operations between YVR and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in favour of daily service from Los Angeles to Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia Airlines has been operating twice-weekly service on this route since November 1995. North Vancouver Air have announced the aquisistion of three BAe Jetstream 32s for introduction to its fleet during the first half of 1999. Westjet from Janaury 28-April 11 will add Vancouver-Kelowna-Grand Prairie twice weekly 'Limited Addition' flights.
