16. Saturday
10/7/99 On the Road in Peru
On Friday night I took the nightbus
to Arica. I had a quick look around and crossed the border in the afternoon
to Tacna, Peru.
First impressions of Peru.. it's much
more modern than I expected . Tacna is quiet nice with lots of greenery
and trees and about 20 internet cafes.
Saturday - Arica and Tacna
.....
imprisoned
in the bathroom
silly me though it was Saturday night
I thought I would have an early night. Only problem there was a draught
coming from the bathroom, the door wouldn't shut properly. I ended up going
into the bathroom to see if I could close it from inside . I could !
...The only problem was that they had installed the door back to front
and I couldn't get it open again. No chance of getting out of the window
after all the gap is too small, I'm on the third floor and the window is
rusted up. I can't call, cos my room is right at the back and anyway I've
left my money belt right on the bed. OK I'll kick the door in.... no it
just happens to be made of the sturdiest wood imaginable.
So I end up climbing out of the 3
rd floor window onto the boiler over the roof through the back of a backery
through a restaurant , into the street back up to the reception. Where
the night watchman doesn't have a spare key. He offers me a terrible room
with no sheets and says wait until morning. If the can't oopen it now how
are they going to open it in the morning. Maybe they'll openit while I'm
asleep and then makee off with my money belt. I move the mattress to in
front of the door to wait it out. Eventually at 1 am some other long term
guest takes charge and says that the door will open with one of the keys
for an upstairs room..and sure enough after the fifth attempt it does.
The watchman wants a tip.... It wasn't
my fault they installed the door backwards !!
