Parati was the most interesting place I visited in Brazil...whereas every other place is so over developed, this is a perfectly well preserved colonial seaside town. Occasionally the sea comes in and washes the streets

Potosi The Maria Victoria Guesthouse : cheap great ambience, great rooftop terrace and views

Lima  Hotel Espana  : really near the parliament building and cathehdral

Residencias are the ones to go for 2000 Pesoes and up ($4+) Camping was necessary on the Camino Austral
Actually the best deals were with families hanging around the bus stations etc

San Pedro xxx Camping sorry I can't remember the name even though I stayed there 3 times . It's right opposite the only gas station. From the bus walk west through the craft market, into the main square , keep going straight on for 400m and its a door on the right 3000 867 Tel : 253 688
not only camping , but chalets as well 3000 per person. I like it because it has a nice garden with a cooker in . So you can hang out and cook. The Lonely Planet is wrong about it being the Indian capital of Chile. The culture is much better and cheaper in Bolivia and Peru. The reason to come to San Pedro is to experience the desert ..it's worth 2 days max

2500 p A very friendly French couple run a small guesthouse , and really show you around also ..they took us to the winery and a village festival , they also take people fishing , hiking etc

Tel : 44 20 16, I stayed at the Casa Suzza in Villarica which is a good place if you are German speaking, but a bit anti-English, I found myself travelling to Pucon everyday (1 hour) anyway Pucon has more atmosphere, (go up the volcano on your own if the weather is reliable and save $40 on a tour !)

Pedro de valdivia  : Family House  sorry I can't remember the details, but it was right in front of the old train station, 4 blocks away from the bus station or take a micro
The Youth hostel was a rip off, this is a little further out , but much more friendlier and cheaper, I met the son handing out cards at the bus terminal

Pumalin  : Private National Park  Take the bus north 4 pm everyday from Chaiten or the ferry from Puerto Montt
This is a unique place an eccentric American bought a huge area to preserve for the future. So most of it is off limits . There are 4 main trails, which are reaaly well done, with steps, signposts etc .  It has facilities for rich people, but on the whole it is not geared to making money. At the ferry dock there is a reception , camping for $2 . A guy comes at night to collect the money , or there are some 3 walled BBQ huts which you can use for $3. 10 Km down the road there are 3 other trails , one of these also has a campsite. Because of rain I did all the trails in one day. The big problem is transport, it only comes when the ferry comes. So get up early to hitch-hike !

North to South

Buenos Aires  Albegue Orono1628 Espinosa (corner of Avda Juan B Justo and Avda San Martin Tel : 581 6663, 581 9387 ..$7 , Buenos Aires is the cheapest area of Argentina !
great atmosphere, rooftop terrace , good advice, kitchen etc. 2Km from center, but worth it. Call and they'll tell you what bus to take
 
Sierra De La Ventana   Camping  the best place I found was a really friendly bloke , from the staion follow the tracks across the bridge and walk down the steps and it's there $5 , the area is the Yorkshire Dales of Argentina . Not so interesting , but has a cheap night train to Buenos Aires

Puerto Madryn   Hotel Gran Madryn  (see webpage) A friendly place to relax, $20 per person
The Municipal camping :   2.5 Km south along the beach $3.50 , distant but cheap

Rio Grande  The fabulous Club Nautico  Camping INSIDE the club building (well it is cold), on the seafront keep going south until the river meets the sea , $5
great atmosphere and BBQs say hello to Benja,  Inti and todas los huevones (the gang)

Ushuaia Refugio de Alta Montana Cheap and snug hostel halfway up the glacier a 20 minute walk from (Tel :1560 30013)
$5 $7 inc breakfast ... expensive food , but has kitchen  
 

URUGUAY

Almost every town has free camping at the municipal park, which usually have river beaches. Friendly, but not the most spectacular region of South America
