`` In February 4, 1959 Bishop Leven informed the Franciscan Sisters that the U.S. Government was leasing vacant land in the south side of San Antonio that could be used for health care, education, or for church purposes. Immediately Sister Leocadia notified her Mother Superior in Pittsburgh, and they made arrangements to respond to the offer.
In November, after offering a proposal for the property, a 16 acre territory, was approved by the Department concerned. The Sisters were notified that the Charter to operate as a Corporation of Texas had to be issued so steps were immediately taken to obtain a Charter. After a few days Sister Martina Antalek and Sister Leocadia went to the lawyer's office, Mr. A. M. Heck, and a Charter was drawn. Offices were needed so Sister Lecocadia was named the President, Sister Martina Antalek designated to be the Secretary.
Ground Breaking
The required fees were forwarded to the Health Educational Welfare Department of Dallas for security the government property in December 19,1959. On September 6,1960 the contract for St. Francis was signed. Without even a building, classes started at St. Joseph's elementary school while the main building of the present site was being constructed. Twenty-two Freshman registered and Sister Martina Antalek taught Math and English, she was also appointed to be the first principal. The main school opened its doors on September 5, 1961. The main building served as a residence for the School Sisters as well as a School. The Convent-Cafeteria building was completed and formally dedicated in October, 1962. Sr. Frances Marie(Leocadia) De Lac, O.S.F. was the first principal.
