St.
Gabriel’s Music Ministry
Policies/Procedures
2001-2002
Rehearsals:
-
Every Thursday,
7:30-9:45 in the Church.
-
Sunday morning,
9:45-10:15 in the Church.
We will start promptly at the conclusion of 8:30
mass with a warm-up and review of select music.
-
Extra rehearsals
will be scheduled as needed for Christmas, Easter and other
special Liturgies.
Requirements:
-
Desire to
lead the congregation through music and song in active
participation in the Liturgy.
-
Consistent
attendance at rehearsals/weekend and special Liturgies.
-
Prompt arrival
at the start of rehearsals.
-
Consistent
effort to learn words and music.
Procedures:
-
Please arrive
promptly for all rehearsals (7:30 Thursday, 9:45
Sunday morning, and one-half hour before all other masses for
warm-up and review).
-
Every
member of the Music Ministry will be assigned a black,
three-ring binder which will be numbered; all music in
the binder should have the same number.
-
Congregational
selections will be a mix of unison/melody and simple
harmony. We will distribute a core group of SATB
selections at the beginning of the year. Please keep
these in your black binder. All other congregational
songs will be sung from the Music Issue and/or Gather book.
-
Refrain from
drinking water, coffee or chewing gum in Church during
Liturgies. This
can be very distracting to the congregation.
-
Once the Liturgy
begins, don’t leave the Church but remain in/at your seats
for the entire service. This,
too, can be distracting to the congregation.
-
For the Gospel
Response, The
full choir will remain seated.
-
For the Memorial
Acclamation, the choir will remain seated (at
the edge of your seats for good breath support).
-
Singers/musicians
from ALL ensembles must attend the Thursday adult choir
rehearsals. This will help us all learn material together
so Sunday morning can be used as a refresher.
-
All ensembles
should follow the order of congregational music selections as they are
chosen and not randomly add or drop pieces from the
Liturgy. Fr. Fred
has asked for a consistency of experience between Liturgies.
-
We will prepare
some prelude and reflection pieces (not every week), some choir and some
instrumental, which may vary between masses depending on the
ensembles involved. All
such selections must be approved by Kevin.
Feel free to offer suggestions. Fr. Fred’s only guideline is that our selections be
appropriate, fitting the Scripture readings.
-
Fr. Fred would like
our help in creating “the proper mood” before Liturgies
start. The
choir and all ensembles should be finished with sound checks,
tuning, organizing and rehearsing no later than 10 minutes
before the start of a Liturgy.
Any prelude music (piano, instrument, or occasional choral
piece) will begin 5 minutes before the Liturgy.
-
You
are invited to join the
Bereavement Choir, which ministers at funerals.
A set binder of music selections for families to choose
from is in the music/reading room. These singers have made themselves available on very short
notice to sing at funerals.
If you’re interested in joining this ensemble pool, please
see Kevin or Kelly.
-
AND THE MOST
IMPORTANT PROCEDURAL POINT OF ALL….We will take
our traditional 15-minute break during each Thursday rehearsal
promptly at 8:30 for good food and fellowship in the Gathering
Area. We will work up a
schedule of rotating groups responsible for providing the
food/drink.
Thank
you for joining the St. Gabriel Music Ministry for 2001-2002. If you have ANY ideas/suggestions on how to make our ministry
better, we want to hear from you!
Remember, this is YOUR ministry and will only be as good as
each one of us makes it.
CONGRATULATIONS!
