Our Band Studio!!! St. Hilda's Secondary School Band, formed in 1976, gained symphonic status in 1986 with the introduction of woodwind instruments into the band. As a concert band, it focusses on attaining a good standard in musicianship, performance skills, general music appreciation and character-building.Since its inception, the Band owes its achievements to the diligent and committed direction of its former instructresses and instructors namely, Ms. Nirmala Naidu, Mrs. P. Lemos, Mr. E.M. Hendricks, Ms. Kathleen Anthony and Mr. Tan Swee Sing, and to its present instructor, Mr. Andy Sim. To date the enrolment of the band stands at 123. Top on its list of priorities are service tot he school and the community. The Band performs during important school functions and has contributed to community projects such as the official opening of a dialysis centre and a police post, a fringe concert in conjunction with the Singapore Arts Festival and mass band displays on National Day. In recent years, the Band participated in numerous music-exchange programmes with various schools. In 1999, they embarked on a tour to Perth, Australia, with schools in Singapore and performed in combined schools' concert entitled "Synfonica" which immersed to the school in a series of cooperative learning experience. Last year, the band travelled to Klang and Kuala Lumpur for an exciting music exchange with bands in Malaysia. Learning from other bands has helped to develop and hone the skills of the band in St. Hilda's to higher levels. What our members say...."Over the four years…I got to know more people, and I could see that as the years went by…the band became more united, with the secondary fours interacting with the secondary twos and threes…it was something that I did not really see when I was in sec one… I grew to love band as the years went by…I really hated band practices when I was in secondary twos, and dreaded coming back for practices. Now that I am graduating, I kind of miss the practices as well as the people…whom I bonded with. With our new conductor, I found that the band improved tremendously and were more hardworking…we too went through sad and happy times together….i really hope to see the band more united as the years go by…" Joanna Hu, Saxophone Section ASL 00/01, Band Treasurer.
