Visit to the Qohaito Historical sight

Armed with a permit from the ministry of tourism me and Shiny Jo set off on new years day to visit Nick and Sarah in Adi Keyh and to see the sights at Qoahaito, the sight of an ancient Axumite town. We were promissed a spectacular walk and beautiful views, but warned that the archaeological sights did not match those of Ethiopia or Egypt.

After cycling together to Decemhare Jo left her bike and took a hitch. After setting off rather late we only made it to Segeineti, 50K from Adi Keyh, by dusk and spend the night there, heading for Adi Keyh on the followng morning, be by bike and Jo by bus. The escarpments and surrounding mountains of the southern highlands are really dramatic and there's a long, long drag up the final climb to the town itself.

In Adi Keyh we were hosted by VSOs Nick and Sarah, who treated us like royalty, their house a treasure trove of snacks and treats sent by benefactors back home. Expertly guided by Sarah we walked up the track to the plateau on which Quahaito is situated, at an altitude of 2800 meters. From here we could see Eritrea's highest mountain, Embasoura, in the distance. A guide here checked our permit and took us round the ruins of an ancient palace (four pillars) and an "egyptian tomb" - although no-one seems to know what it actually is.

The following day's ride back to Asmara took 4 1/2 hours, with a stop in Decemhare to pick up some of the local honey. I'd arranged to meet Jo there, but she never showed and her disappearance was explained when she turned up the following day - her bus had hit a camel!
