After the previous weekend's impromptu camping on the cycle ride to Elabored we decided to do things properly and take sleeping bags to walk from bar Siedieci (16 km down the Nefasit Escarpment) through the river valley to Mai Habar. With a good track leading from the bar to the village of Gooly we simply had to follow the river from there through to Mai Habar. What could go wrong. So laden with enough water, and sufficient salad, flapjack and treats to feed a small army we rode out to Seoidieci, left the bikes and headed down the path. On the track down we were guided by an Eritrean schoolkid returning from his afternoon shift. Every day he walks the hour uphill to bar 16 where he collects his bike and freewheels the 10 down to school in Nefasit. Then at the end of school he has to ride the 10K up the escarpment, eave his bike and walk down to his home in Gooly - beats the UK school run in the range rover, no wonder everyone is so fit here. We found the riverbed easily - rivers in Eritrea are seasonal at best and for the most part this was a dry path, although there were regular springs and even a small waterfall. Half way to Mai habar, after a couple of hours we found a suitable spot and made our camp. A fire kept the evening chill (and the Hyenas) off and this time with the luxury of thermorest and sleeping bag we spent a cosy night out watching the stars. In the morning we toasted bread over another fire and continued another two hours to Mai Habar.
