Hibiscus - The Pride of the Nation
A popular flowering plant in Malaysia and the tropics, the hibiscus is seen to equal the rose in
the temperate countries.
Indeed, it lives up to its name Queen of Tropical Flowers by being the national
flower of Malaysia, Jamaica and the state flower of Hawaii.
Belonging to the cotton family Malvacea, the ornamental hibiscus (rosa
sinensis) as we commonly know consists of about three hundred species. Although it is a
native of tropical Asia, it has spread to many places in the world. Each year, numerous hybrids
of the flower are released making it difficult to keep track of the nomenclature.
In Malaysia, the hibiscus is known as Bunga Raya. It is a plant requiring the least attention.
As such it has found its way into much of of the rural as well as urban areas. But its
popularity can be attributed to its large and perennial blooms. It has also proved useful as a
form of traditional medicine and cosmetic. In other parts of the world, the various species of
hibiscus has been used as food crops, vegetable ornamentals, fibres, medicine and timber.
Yet, for all the usefulness that can be derived from the hibiscus, there is a dearth of books
illustrating its virtues and horticultural aspects.
