In 1994, I went back to college at Appalachian State University to obtain certification to teach English as a Second Language. I received my degree in 1997. This was the realization of a personal goal I had set for myself while I was serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Belize. During my service, I realized that I wanted to make teaching English to speakers of Spanish a new career goal, because I enjoyed the interchange that took place working in the classroom. I also began a serious study of Spanish, which I continued over the years that followed. Sí, Habla Español! Jerry and I returned went to Mexico in 1998 and taught English for two months at a public school in Tezuitlan in the state of Puebla. We went to Oaxaca for two months, and then returned to make our permanent home in Hickory, where I began teaching ESL part-time for Catawba Valley Community College. I taught industry classes, going into local furniture companies who had requested the classes for their Hispanic employees. I also taught Introduction to Citizenship classes on Saturday mornings at CVCC for a brief time. Before Peace Corps. I was a staff member at Manatee Community College in Bradenton, Florida. I was the Media Specialist in the Division of Continuing Education, and I also attended classes there. I enjoy teaching tremendously, especially working with adult students. I find it very rewarding, and wish that I had gotten a much earlier start with my teaching career. Section on Travel is being considered.
