There stands an old rugged Cross
on the hill of Calvary
Where once the sacrifical blood
was shed for all to see ~
The glory of God's promises
in the gift of His only Son
Sent to die for all our sins
before our lives begun.
For God knew every one of us
before we were even born
He knows every hair upon our heads,
our every fashion and form ~
He knew that we would soon become
what we chose to be
Even if we turn away
from the truth that sets us free.
But He loves us anyway
regardless of what we've done
For He gave to us the gift of life
through His precious Son ~
For Jesus came that we might have
Life Eternally,
He chose to die for our sins,
He chose to set us free.
So why did He come into a world
knowing He would die?
When the promise He would give to us
is one some would soon deny ~
Would it be worth a thousand deaths
with those nails in His hands,
To die for all the hurt and shame
and sins of a guilty man?
Jesus could have walked away
if only He had lied,
He could have saved Himself from death
if He had just denied ~
He could have chosen the easy way
had He never been
The One who came to save the world
from sin on Calvary.
But Jesus chose to die for us
so we'd never have to know
The pain of eternal death He saw
in the fiery depths below ~
He paid the price for sin and death
the battle has been won,
And we have Eternal Life in Him
no matter what we've done!
He chose the nails in His hands
that day on Calvary
He knew that He would surely die
for His love for you and me ~
He took with Him to that Cross
all our sins and shame,
And you know something else, my friend?
He would do it all again!
There stands an old rugged Cross
high upon a hill
A promise of His sacrifice
and that He loves us still ~
He chose to die in our place
for Life Eternally,
Though it wasn't the nails that held him there
but His love for you and me.

"This poem is about the promise of Easter. It is about the love Jesus has for us....the love God has for us, that He gave us His Son to die in our place! So we would have eternal life in Him, and never have to know the pain of eternal death. He did that just for us because He loves us! That much! Jesus could have chosen to walk away, and deny being the Messiah. He could have continued to live His life on earth as a man, with His friends and family, and not have had to worry about this death. I mean, He was the Messiah, wasn't He? He never had to die. He could live forever. But He came to earth to do this. He came to pay the price for our sins. ALL our sins ~ every one of us. Because none of us are innocent. Jesus chose to die for us; He chose those nails....He chose us. Why? Because He loves us. And that is the promise of Easter."
