Stone arrives back at the factory carrying some hot spuds and starts throwing them too members of undercover.
Bernie: How'd you go?
Oscar: He didn't flinch when I said five pounds.
Bernie: He wouldn't of flinched if you said a tone.
Mac: He wasn't even part of the Griffith Marfia.
Bernie: (Being Italian takes offence) Why is it whenever anyone ever mentions a marijuana crop, the next thing they say his Italian?
Mac: Well is there something about this Wilkes we should know?
Bernie: Mac, I'm, I'm just sick of this whole Italian dope-dealing thing.
Mac: Oh, sorry, look I know it was lame but it was a joke...
Bernie: Wilkes is not an Italian, but what he is, is one of the biggest marijuana produces in the country. Let's keep what's important in sight here.
Mac: Ok lets. Look how is everything anyway?
Bernie: The family situation? Well I think the counseling is a help. Part of the deal was for me to spend more time with Lucy and the kids. That's something I should have done a long time ago. I'll see you later.
Bernie and his wife Lucy Rocca are walking back to the car after finishing their session at the Geiger Institute where the couple have both been attending marriage guidance counseling.
Lucy: That wasn’t too bad.
Bernie: You know Luce, sometimes this whole counseling business just seems to bring up more than it sorts out.
Lucy: Yeah (laughs) I know, but we need this Bernie, we do. We're doing fine.
Bernie: Yeah I know, I know. Do you think we'll be ok, Lucy?
Lucy: Yeah! The couple arrives back at the house and parks the car out in the front driveway.
Lucy: Well. Here we are.
Bernie: Yeah!
Lucy: Bernie! Why don't you come for dinner tomorrow night!
Bernie: What?
Lucy: Well, If you're free that is.
Bernie: To the house?
Lucy: Yeah, the kids are missing you.
Bernie: Yeah, yeah, I'd like that. What about seven? (Lucy nods) Good.
Lucy: I better go (goes to get out of the car)
Bernie: Oh, no, no, I'll walk you up to...
Lucy: No, no (both get out of the car and walk up to the front door, unaware that some dark stranger is stalking them)
Bernie: I'll ah bring some wine.
Lucy: Red.
Bernie: Pure.
Lucy: Great!
Bernie: We're going to be fine Luce.
Lucy: Yeah!
Bernie: Goodnight. (Turns to walk away)
Lucy: Bernie?
Bernie: What?
Lucy: Do you reckon you could put the bin out on the way?
Bernie: Yeah, yeah sure.
Soon after a shadowy dark figure appears out of nowhere from behind a bush and fires two guns shots. Shooting Bernie in the back and leaving a traumatized Lucy to come to his aide. Backs at the factory the others have just receive the bad news.
Mac: He's in intensive care. It's still touch and go.
Oscar: What Bernie in?
Peter: Bernie's a fighter. He's not going to chuck in the towel.
Mac: The ah, shooting was the work of a lone gunman. There are no witnesses. No one's come forward as yet.
Peter: That's all they're telling us.
Angie: A signal one for Bernie. It's unbelievable.
Pete: They know where he lived.
Mac: There's nothing to say it's connected to work as yet.
Pete: Oh come on, Mac. Are we getting too close to someone or what?
Mac: That's a question for homicide.
Peter: Oh! (Storms out of the room, bumping into one of the other workers at the undercover factory)
Later at the factory, Mac has just arrived back from her meeting with the Deputy Commissioner with Bernie's fill in replacement, Susan Abbott, with whom everyone is mortified at her arrival and don't take too kindly to her overbearing, authoritarian, by the book approach, particularly Church.
Mac: This is detective Sergeant Susan Abbott (Everybody stares dumbfounded and in complete disbelief at Bernie's new fill in) Until further notice she will be acting officer in charge.
Angie: (To Church and Stone) Why isn't Mac filling in? She's got all the experience.
Peter: Yeah, but not the contacts or the brown nose.
Mac: (To Susan Abbott) I'll get them together. You can fill them in.
Oscar: (Gossiping to Church and Angie about Abbott) I know her from somewhere.
Angie: Works undercover?
Oscar: No, somewhere else. My induction intro. Into the Academy.
Angie: Oh right, so she's Human Resources.
Peter: That'd be right.
Susan: Ok, I hope as I'm sure you all do that Detective Senior Sergeant. Rocca will be back on deck soon, until then I've been assigned to take over undercover. I've heard great things about this unit. It's got a very impressive record. So let's use that time to build and maintain those high standards.
(The ringing of Church’s mobile rudely interrupts the conference. He answers the phone as starts talking in the middle of the lecture.)
Peter: Jimmy, what have you got for me? Yeah, yeah, keep talking...No, no, keep talking you're right.
Susan: I realize this has been a stressful time for all of you. I will make every effort to provide the support and the guidance to help you through it. But it is essential that everyone moves forward and not dwell on past events. (Angie rolls her eyes in disgust, while Church continues to chat on the phone).
Pete: Righto, yep. (Throws the phone down on the desk)
Susan: Let me make on thin absolutely clear. The shooting is been investigated by homicide. It is not an undercover concern. There'll be no acts of revenge or personal vendettas. This is a time to pull together. Keep your heads down and focus your energy on the cases at hand. Any questions?... Right, let's get to it.
Peter: Mac, what's going on?
Mac: Put it this way. If you've got anything you shouldn't have, get rid of it. (Referring to the file that Church is holding). Peter walks into Mac's office
Peter: What's her story? Why is she here? (Referring to Abbott)
Mac: She's been appointed by the Assistant Commissioner, it's a secret...(Susan watch's closely from her office next door)
Mac: Lets see, Human Resources, Training, I.T.
Church: (Closes the blinds) She's a seat warmer. She's been around, but she's got no practical experience. She doesn't know the street. Look some dope in Brass has said she's got to get her hands dirty and this is her chance and we have to cop it. HQ are always itching to find out more about undercover maybe they thought this is there chance to get one of their own on the inside.
Mac: Don't get all paranoid on me, Pete. Is there something you wanted?
Church: I've got a theory.
Mac: All right, let's here it.
Peter: It's about Bernie's shooter. A dossier on Graham Logan Wilkes.
Mac: Oscar's target.
Peter: Yeah, it's been tucked away in Bernie's office. I found it. He's been building it up for years.
Mac: So it's a file.
Peter: Yeah, it's no ordinary case file. It goes way back before the current investigation. It's go heaps of stuff on it; evidence that tries to link Wilkes to murder. It seems he shot a poacher on his dope plantation, point blank. Homicide never put a finger on him. Did you know Bernie sparked off the current investigation? Rocca went to the drug squad; they didn't come to us. Bernie wanted him real bad. We're about to move on Wilkes, Bernie gets shot. Coincidence.
Mac: Well it could be just that.
Pete: Let's put it to the test.
Mac: How?
Peter: I want to talk to Stonie's informant, Joey. Unofficially of course.
Mac: You think Joey's going to hand over Wilkes?
Peter: Well it's worth a go.
Mac: Maybe you should have a chat to Stone.
Later on Church is with Stone waiting for Joey to show.
Oscar: This isn't the way to do it. Joey's not up to it.
Pete: Look, it'll be good cop, bad cop, all right.
Oscar: Ok, but you're wrong on this. Take a look at him.
Peter: Oh boy!
