In response to what happened in the episode of Stingers just past, it picks up from where we left off in the episode 'Family Values'. The One where Oscar Stone shot and killed Robert 'Chicken' Lake, leading to a big investigation.
Church was called in to see Det. Insp. Andrew Bligh from Internal Affairs to give a statement regarding the events which had taken place surrounding the shooting; which went something like this:
BLIGH: Interview with Senior Constable Church commencing at 5:37 pm. Det.
Graham Zsisti and Det. Insp. Andrew Bligh Internal Affairs present. So tell
us what happened. In your own words.
CHURCH: Chicken got shot!
BLIGH: Go on!
CHURCH: He's dead! (Shows a flashback of the event with Peter saying 'Don't
do it!' and Stone arriving on the scene yelling out `DROP THE WEAPON' before
firing his service revolver).
BLIGH: Let's talk about the victam! This bike.
CHURCH: Biker! He has a name `Robert Lake'. (Replies angrily in a gruff
voice) Known to some as Chicken and he has a wife and a kid.
BLIGH: And his wife was your informant. Why would she inform on her own
husband?
CHURCH: She was wanting hin to go straight.
BLIGH: And he was cooperating too. So he wanted to go straight as well,
yeah?... It must be hard seeing a man you've come to know. Someone trying
to change there life, shot before your eyes just as they're about to make
it. Especially if it transpires that the shooting wasn't necessary. What's
your view on that?
CHURCH: I don't have one.
BLIGH: What you're saying is it's of no consequence of whether or not he
was justifiably shot.
CHURCH: I had the situation under control. He didn't have to shoot him.
BLIGH: This is Constable Stone!
CHURCH: Yes!
BLIGH: I want to be very clear on this. You're saying that constable Stone
shot Robert Lake without reason? (Church gives a nod)
Later you see Stone and Mac waiting out in the waiting room. Stone goes and
gets himself a drink of water and continues pacing backwards and forwards.
Mac asks him again is he sure he doesn't want legal repressentation to which
he declines.
Mac and Peter then head back to the factory where Angie and Danni are
waiting for news. The conversation goes something like this:
DANNI: What's happening? How's Stonie?
PETE: How's Stonie...Alive, yeah! How's Chicken? How's he's widow? How's
he's kid?
Danni then goes in the Mac's office to talk to her about Stone, confessing
to Mac that she helped coach him through his psychological assessment,
giving him the right answers.
Stone is later interviewed that evening by Internal Affairs the interview
goes something like this:
Stones sitting in the room by himself fidgeting with a plastic cup when
Bligh and his colleague enter.
BLIGH: Sorry to keep you waiting, Constable. (The two men shake hands) I'm
sure you'll appreciate the need for thoroughness in these situations.
OSCAR: Yes Sir!
BLIGH: Interview with Constable Stone commencing at 6:55 pm. Det. Insp.
Andrew Bligh and det. Graham Zsisti from Internal Affairs pressent. I
understand you've declined legal repressentation!
OSCAR: I didn't think it was necessary.
BLIGH: It might still be wise.
OSCAR: I just did my duty. I'm sorry of cause but...I had no choice.
BLIGH: Tell me what happened? Take your time.
OSCAR: There's not a lot to tell (Flashes back to the incident) I saw the
man pick up his gun, point it towards Senior Constable Church. He was about
to shoot.
BLIGH: Are you certain of that?
OSCAR: (Nods) Absolutely! I was there as backup. It was my duty to keep a
close watch in case anything went wrong and it did.
BLIGH: Doesn't it seem odd to you that this man was threatening Senior
Constable Church when he was actually covertly cooperating in the operation?
OSCAR: Well there was no time to think about that. A gun was being
pointed, I had to act.
BLIGH: What was Senior Constable Church doing at the time?
OSCAR: He was on the ground, he was unarmed. I think he was trying to stop
Chicken.
BLIGH: You think! but you're not sure?
OSCAR: If you want to be sure what he was doing you'd probably need to ask
him. I did my duty Sir.
BLIGH: That's all you can do, Constable.
Bligh then goes in next door to Bill Hollisters office, where Bill is seated
at his desk.
BLIGH: The bikie shooting, Bill. I want it treated as a murder
investigation.
BILL: Murder?
BLIGH: Yeah! I think undercover have pushed it's luck too far this time.
BILL: Well have you interviewed all the police at the scene?
BLIGH: Predictably, they support Stones version of the events, the bikie's
support Churches. I think there's enough discrepensy to push for a
conviction on this one.
BILL: Yeah! But this going to be hard to prove, isn't it?
BLIGH: That's where you come in, Bill. I want all the evidence: every
little bit.
BILL: Yeah of cause.
BLIGH: Ballistics, triggettories, burns, witness statements, the lot...I
want wind speed, weather, everything.
Hollister and MacKenzie later meet up in the lift where Hollister informs
her that Bligh has decided to turn the Stone shooting incident, resulting in
the death of a biker, into a murder investigation.
Bligh later interviews MacKenzie over the shooting incident where he , accuses her a certain members of the undercover unit of being culperable in the events surrounding Constable Stone and threatens her by saying that if she isn't careful then she and her unit could find themselves convicted of perverting the cause of justice and if his worst fears are founded her trigger-happy colleague with go down for murder and the undercover unit will be finished.
Later back at the factory. Stone is on the bench press when Church enters and the two start fighting.
CHURCH: I like to here your side of it. I want to know what you thought
you were doing, yesterday?
STONE: WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK I WAS DOING?..HOW ABOUT SAVING YOUR LIFE!
CHURCH: There was no need to shoot him.
STONE: (Goes to dry off his face with the hand towel) BULLSHIT!! You'd be
dead if I hadn't. (retorts angrily)
CHURCH: Mate! I had it under control all you needed to do was let me...
STONE: LET YOU DO WHAT? Are we on the same side? I save your ass and this
is how you say thanks. PISS OFF!! (Goes to walk pass Church, suddenly
turning to face him) This is what you told I.A.?
CHURCH: I told them what happened.
STONE: Alright! Well you can't argue with that now, can ya'? SO WHAT
HAPPENED? COME ON, From your point of view, WHAT HAPPENED?
CHURCH: Are you getting councelling?
STONE: WHAT? WHAT ARE YOU SAYING?
CHURCH: You need it.
STONE: My only problem is I'm being investigated for saving someone's life.
SOMEONE I thought was a MATE!!
Mac enters the room
MAC: OSCAR! Pete.
Later MacKenzie gives all the unit a briefing on what's happening with the
investigation letting them know that a colleague is being targeted, and if
they aren't sure of what's going on to pretent they don't know. Meanwhile
Stone is giving Church death stares and Church winds up storming out of the
briefing and Mac chases after him.
MAC: Peter! Pete. Do we need to talk?
PETE: You tell me.
MAC: I'm aware there may be some discrepency in interpretation of the facts
between yourself...
PETE: Oh that's good, a discrepency in interpretation of the facts,
brilliant.
MAC: Don't give me grief, Pete. We need solidarity on this.
PETE: WHAT ABOUT JUSTICE!
MAC: Oscar was a police officer doing his job as he saw it.
PETE: That's the party line, is it?
MAC: NO! Oscar is also intitled to JUSTICE! When are you been
reinterviewed?
PETE: Two!
MAC: Do we have a problem?
PETE: I've got work to do.
Meanwhile Oscar is in the kitchen, swated down scowering through the fridge
for some fruit juice.
OSCAR: Juice! Juice! Juice! (Angie enters and walks over to him tapping him
on the shoulder, startling him a causing him to duck and pull away sharply
and scrample to his feet) SHIT!!
ANGIE: Sorry!
OSCAR: Yeah! Yeah right! (Storms off and is just about to leave the room)
ANGIE: Are you alright?
OSCAR: (Turns around sharply to face her) THERE'S SO MUCH CRAP IN THAT
FRIDGE, I CAN'T FIND A BLOODY THING!! HOW CAN YOU EAT THAT STUFF!! (Storms
off in a huff leaving Angie looking shocked and dumbfounded by his unusually
disturbing and aggressive behaviour)
ANGIE: (Heads into Mac's office)Mac! You got a minute?
MAC: Yeah sure!
ANGIE: It's about Stone. I just want you to reasure me that he was ready to
go back out when he was reasigned?
MAC: What makes you think he wasn't?
ANGIE: Well, I thought he was acting a little weird. But he was so
desperate to get back in the saddle I let it slide.
MAC: Weird in what way?
ANGIE: It's hard to put a finger on it exactly, but he was so desperate to
prove he was over being shot. You know, like buying that stupid motor bike.
MAC: Angie, I hear you and I understand you concern. But I'm convinced we
did the right thing.
ANGIE: Are you?
MAC: Absolutely!
ANGIE: I just can't help thinking if I had of come to you earlier none of
this would have happened.
MAC: Oscar fired because he thought Pete was in danger. Now if you or I
were in that position, we'd of done the same thing, wounldn't we?
ANGIE: (Nods) Thanks!
Later that day Church is at Blighs office for his 2:00 appointment.
BLIGH: Interview with Senior Constable Peter Church recommenced at 2:16 pm.
You've read Constable Stones statement concerning the shooting death of
Robert Lake?
CHURCH: Yes!
BLIGH: You would agree that it contradicts your version of the same set of
events?
CHURCH: (Nods) Yes!
BLIGH: And your statement is true and correct in every aspect?
CHURCH: To the best of my knowledge, yes!
BLIGH: How do you explain Constable Stones differing point of view?
CHURCH: I can't!
BLIGH: Are you surprised that your statement is contradicted?
CHURCH: Nothing surprises me.
BLIGH: I realize this is a difficult time for you. So tell me again at the
time of the shooting did you think Robert Lake was about to fire his pistel
at you?
CHURCH: I don't know, maybe. It all seemed to happen so fast.
BLIGH: Perhaps, I'm not making myself clear.
CHURCH: Oh well, well it was all a blur, it still is.
BLIGH: Yesterday you were certain you had the whole thing under control.
CHURCH: How can I be certain if it was all a blur?
BLIGH: She's got at you hasn't she?
CHURCH: (Laughs)
BLIGH: MacKenzie!
CHURCH: No she hasn't.
BLIGH: Conspiracy to provert the course of justice. You've heard of it, I'm
sure.
CHURCH: Yes, I've heard of it.
BLIGH: That's where toeing MacKenzies partyline will take you and do you
know where it leads? Straight out of the force and straight into jail. Do
not pass go, do not collect your superannuation.
Now I'll ask you once more. At the time of the shooting did you think you
were on the point of being shot?
CHURCH: I D-O-N-T K-N-O-W!
Later on they wen't on to have the enquist and Stone, Mac, Hollister and
finally Church all had to get up and give their statement in front of Robert
Lakes wife and other court attendants.
Stone lost it that night after having to get up at the enquist and give his statement, when he thought the bikies were out to settle the score and is still abusing steriods.
Hollister and MacKenzie's relationship finally came out in the open and Hollister organized a ten day trip to Bailly for the two of them earlier on.
The court ruling was overturned and all parties escaped charges after
Church's statement when he announced.
CHURCH: Constable Stone didn't have time to realize that, he had to act. If
I had been in the same position. Saw what he saw. Gun drawn. I'd of done
the same thing.
Church and Stone late reconsiled there difference's and made up and finally
Bill Hollister was killed when he got blown up in a car bomb attack.
