White Ants - Quotes

Church and a criminal he was targeting for a robbery regarding the TAB have been taken into custody down at HQ. Both men are hurling abuse at each other each trying to goad the other and calling each other names, while being led down the corridors at Head Quarters to the briefing rooms. Church’s target wind up being led into one of the briefing rooms by an officer, while the other police officer waits for him to close the door behind him so that he can unhand cuff Church.

Pete: He did the TAB job with two others… .I didn’t get their names but I’m sure you boys will catch up to them.
Officer: Yep!
Pete: Here, you’ll find the weapons they used and ah… thanks for the realism. Officer: You’re welcome.
Mac: (Enters) Well done!
Pete: Thanks Mac!
Bryan: Good job! Paul.
Mac: Peter!
Bryan: Yeah! alright, whatever, Listen I want you to meet someone. Come on!
Mac: Who?
Bryan: You know the Madigan case?
Mac: Samuel Madigan!
Bryan: Yeah!
Pete: Madigan’s in your office?
Bryan: No! But the guy who’s going to bring him down is. For eight years I’ve been trying to get Madigan into court and for eight years he’s been laughing at us, all of us.
Pete: Because he’s got a rat cunning lawyer!
Bryan: But this time I reckon I’ve nailed him. Meet my secret weapon.
(They all enter the room where Gary Edgerton is seated)
Don’t go out, mate there’s just a couple of ah, officers I’d like you to meet. Gary Edgerton this is Det. Sen. Sgt. Ellen MacKenzie. She’s the head of the Undercover…(All take a seat)
Gary: How many people do you want to see my face before the trial?
Bryan: It’s alright! Alright, there fellow undercover officers.
Gary: Look I’ve been a police officer for eight years. Do you understand that?
Bryan: Ah yeah! Sorry, of cause, absolutely but look this is pretty important. This officer here (referring to Church, who’s sitting across from Bryan) has been a regular contact of your old informant, this ah… This Faggit (pronounces faeget) guy. Now the thing is we need to get this Fagget’s (Faegets) cooperation.
Mac: Bryan Faggit! (Faeget)
Bryan: Yeah! Bruce Faggit (Faeget) That’s his name.
Mac: Faejit! It’s pronounced Faejet!
Bryan: Oh is it? Right anyway, this officer and Bruce have developed a report.
Gary: But what is it exactly you need Bruce’s cooperation with?
Bryan: He’s going to be a witness.
Gary: Bullshit!
Bryan: You know what a snake Madigan’s lawyer can be so we need…
Gary: No! Hang on the force had an agreement with Bruce. He doesn’t testify.
Bryan: Yeah Well! We’re going to have to renege on that.
Gary: You know this kind of garbage is exactly the reason I got out of the force in the first place. Nothing’s changed has it? STILL BEING RUN BY A BUNCH OF ASSHOLES!!
Bryan: Yep! Yep, just calm down, OK! You want to get Madigan like we do. The guys scum…
Gary: Look! There’s only one witness that matters here, Gray. Me! DO YOU UNDERSTAND THAT!! See, I made the case against Madigan.
Bryan: I know, We all know that, that’s.. I mean that’s indisputable and you’re gold. You are gold to us.
Gary: Yeah! Well you UNDERSTAND THIS! What kind of a case do you think you’re going to have WITHOUT ME!! (Violently hurls a book back at Bryan before getting up and storming out).
Bryan: No! Gary, Gary, mate, GARY!
Pete: You’re a real people person, Bryan.
Bryan: You’re going to have to get him back.
Mac: We have to!
Bryan: Well, you know his ex-undercover. You can talk sense.
Pete: I agree with what he said.
Bryan: Let me put it this way. If he walks, Madigan walks. It’s down to you.

Gary Edgerton goes to go down in the lift when Church approaches him.

Pete: Gary wait we’ve got to talk.
Gary: Don’t even try it.
Pete: I’m on your side here, mate. Grays an A-Grade dickhead. But you know he’s right!
Gary: Yeah! I don’t like treating informant’s like they’re disposable.
Pete: Me either! Good gigs are rare and Bruce is good, but we don’t have a choice. Gray’ll just supenior him anyway. So if I arrange it you’ll with him, alright!
Gary: Ok! Arrange the meeting. Gods knows, I’d rather it came from me than him getting a supenior anyway.

Back at the factory.

Danni: This is some job Madigan pulled off. City branch at West bank, $4.5 Million, none of it ever recovered.
Angie: A security guard was shot.
Danni: Oh yeah! Has been in a wheelchair ever since, poor buggar. The bank Manager had a nervous breakdown and three of the tellers are still getting counseling.
Angie: And the eight years since. He hasn’t done a minute’s jail time.
Pete: God bless Lawyers’.
Danni: Yeah! She must be something this, ah…
Oscar: Olwyn O’Neil, smart cookie, good looking to.
Angie: You’re a fan!
Oscar: You’ve got to admire class. She delayed one trial by arguing the judge was biased, dragged it out for ages, then when they finally replaced him she turns up evidence the jury’s been tampered with.
Angie: Someone dobbed them in!
Danni: This time he’s going down.
Pete: That’s the plan.

A little later Church has teed up a meeting with Bruce Faggit and Gary Edgerton down at the local pub. Gary is running a little late.

Bruce: Not that I’m complaining but what are we doing here?
Pete: Like I said we need to talk.
Bruce: As long as you’re shouting we’re talking.
Gary: (Enters) Good ‘aye Bruce!
Bruce: I’ll be buggered (They shake hands) Mate! How long’s it been?
Gary: Oh a few years. Sit down!
Bruce: You blokes know each other?
Pete: Yeah! We’re acquainted.
Bruce: (To Gary) You know I just thought about you the other day.
Gary: Yeah!
Bruce: There was this bit in the news about Samuel Madigan’s.
Pete: That’s what we want to talk to you about.
Bruce: Yeah! (Looks at them both) Bullshit!
Pete: We need you, Bruce.
Bruce: we had a deal. I’m out of it.
Pete: I know how you feel, mate, but we need you to testify.
Bruce: The cops said I wouldn’t have to. We made a deal.
Pete: We can’t honour it.
Gary: He’s right, they can’t. Look! here’s the situation, mate, you go home and pack a bag. You jump on a bus, a plane, flog a car I don’t give a shit. You just get the hell out of the state.
Bruce: Madigan gets my name, I’m dead.
Gary: That’s right!
Pete: No it’s not! We can protect you.
Gary: Don’t let him talk to you about this police protection bullshit! Listen, Madigan will get you. You know he will. You get out now, mate.
Bruce: I want money.
Pete: Can’t happen.
Bruce: Yes it can! I’m an informant. You guys pay me for information, right! Well my testimonies chocka with information.
Gary: Don’t do it, Bruce.

Later back at HQ Mac is talking to Bryan Gray.

Bryan: No, no! If it came out in court he was being paid it would cast doubt on his testimony.
Mac: I know.
Bryan: We are not paying him.
Mac: I agree, we can’t. The thing is church believes he may try and abscond.
Bryan: Alrigh1, we’ll pay him.
Mac: What? You can’t do that!
Bryan: A ten thousand dollar limit and the money has to be paid into a third party account. Actually no, better still cash, cash is good, cash to a relative, anything to avoid him getting it directly. Then if he’s asked in court the question `Are you being paid’, he can answer `NO!’ That’s great. That’ll work. You with me, yes, yes, yes! Madigan is not going to get away with this.

Later Mac and Church pay a call on Bruce Fagget at his house only to find him dead with a plastic bag over his head and his tongue cut out. Homicide later arrived on the scene and start interviewing witnesses.

Later at HQ Mac, Bryan and Church all gather around to brief Edgerton on the news of his friend, Fagget’s demise.

Gary: I told you this would happen. You heard me, and you did NOTHING!
Bryan: Our people were on the way.
Gary: Bruce Fagget wouldn’t hurt a fly.
Bryan: Of cause, mate! Of cause he wouldn’t and what I reckon he’d want is to nail Madigan. v Pete: What he’d want is to be alive.
Mac: Bryan thinks it’s best if you’re given police protection.
Gary: Oh! I’m supposed to trust armed robbery to look after me. Is that it? Like they looked after Bruce.
Bryan: You’re getting carried away. This has been a shock to all of us.
Gary: Bruce Faggit trusted us, all of us, and we let him down. Nothing changes with you people, does it! I don’t want your protection. JUST STAY AWAY FROM ME!! (Storms off).

Mac later fills Danni in on her role as a representative of the DPP to go in and provide protection for Edgerton, up at his cabins, up in the Dandenong Ranges, while obtaining vital information from him regarding Madigan as well as trying to prepare him for trial.

Danni later arrives at Edgerton’s out at Dandenong Ranges National Park, up in the mountains.

Gary: Paula Heartly!
Danni: That’s right, DPP. Fantastic spot! I can see why you retired her.
Gary: I didn’t retire. I made a lifestyle choice. (Angie and Stone approach posing an ordinary couple out on their morning walk) Morning! You’re out and about early.
Angie: Yeah!
Oscar: So many birds to see this time of day.
Gary: Yeah good on you. I put those extra towels in your room to.
Angie: Oh’ll! Thanks for that.
Gary: You’re welcome. Have a good day.
Angie: You to. (Both Angie and Stone wave goodbye as they walk pass).
Danni: Satisfied customers!
Gary: Let’s get on with it.

Danni and Gary go and take a seat at one of the tables on Gary’s front porch.

Danni: And this Mr. Fagget introduced you to…
Gary: Madigan! Ah, Samuel Madigan.
Danni: When and where was this meeting?
Gary: Ah! 23rd August, room ah! 52 of the Regent Hotel. It’s in, ah! Is it (vaguely) Exhibition?… Street. Nah! It’s Exhibition Street, yeah!
Danni: And you’re certain about that date!
Gary: What the 23rd ? Well it’s my sister’s birthday. I don’t forget things like that.
Danni: Good! So what was discussed at this meeting?
Gary: Well Madigan asked me if I could supply him with some guns.
Danni: (Play back a tape recording of the two of them talking)… Can you identify that voice? (referring to the first voice on the tape).
Gary: That’s Madigan.
Danni: (Plays the recording of the second voice on the tape) … And the second voice?
Gary: That’s me. It was about, umm… Four days after the initial meeting. Madigan took delivery of, ah three glocks. Three nine millimeter semi-automatic pistols and uh, one of them’s the weapon that the, ah… the gun dropped at the robbery.
Danni: How can you be so certain?
Gary: Well before I uh, sold them to Madigan I marked each of them with a tiny scratch on the barrel. And ah! The weapon in question had that mark.
Danni: Done an amazing job here. Your evidence is very thorough.
Gary: Well you’re slightly better looking than Crown Prosecutor Kransky.
Danni: Gee thanks!

Just then two gunmen, one wearing a dark pair of sunglasses, pull up just outside Gary Edgerton’s place, both carrying guns)

Gary: (Comes back carrying a couple of drinks) There you go. (Passes Danni a drink)
Danni: Thank you! Well we’ve got 24 hours. Do you think you’ll be ready?
Gary: Yeah! I.. I’m a little more comfortable with it.
Danni: How’s it feel reliving it all?
Gary: Hmm! I just wish it was all over really.
(Meanwhile the camera shot goes back to the two- armed gunmen approaching the cabin)
Danni: I meant what I said before about you evidence. You must have been very good at your job.
Gary: What Undercover Cop?
Danni: Hmm! (nods)
Gary: Such people in, get `em to trust you and then betray them… Huh! Some job.
Danni: You’re right!
Gary: Sorry! Look umm, I don’t mean to sound so bitter and twisted, you know. It’s just that, well my experience in the force wasn’t all it might have been.
Danni: You don’t like having to come back, do you?
Gary: Oh! There’s… I just think there’s some things in life that you need to leave behind. You know, leave it in the past and move on. If you don’t you get stuck and it’s like trying to…trying to walk in quicksand. That’s what it was like for me as a cop. Just had to get out, you know!
Danni: And now this!
Gary: Yeah! Getting sucked under again.

Just at that moment Danni spots one of the gunmen only a few metres away from where they are seated. In a reflex reaction she quickly tell’s Edgerton to `Get down’ just as the gunmen go to fire his weapon. The two duck for cover, knocking the table over and using it as a barricade between them and the gunman. Both sides firing rounds at each other.

Suddenly, a gunman appears behind them and is about to fire when Stone rocks us shouting `POLICE’ and shoots the gunman just a he swings around and goes to shoot him. Both Stone and Angie race into make the arrest as Stone and Angie both managed to bring the situation under control.

The incident later winds up becoming a discussion point back at the factory during the briefing and later leads to Danni head off in her car to visit Edgerton but not before talking to Church.

Danni: (Church holds open the car door for her) Very gallant!
Pete: I’ve been thinking about the back fence at home. I was gong to repair it but I think it’s better if we get a new on, you know better in the long term.
Danni: I think we should sell the house.
Pete: What? That’s a bit of a bombshell.
Danni: Oh well! The market’s pretty good at the moment. I’ve been thinking about it for a while.
Pete: You…you just paid me for half of the house.
Danni: I know.
Pete: You haven’t said anything.
Danni: I am now. I just want to be honest, Pete.
Pete: Well it seems sudden. I thought we were still going to give this a go.
Danni: Pete, I’ve given it a go. It’s not going to work. Look what! What we were trying for. It’s in the past and I think that’s where we should leave it.
Pete: What? What just chuck it in?
Danni: Not chuck it in. Leave it be.

Danni later goes and visits Edgerton at his Witness Protection unit where she comes across him talking to Crown Prosecutor. Kransky, who leaves her alone with Edgerton to try and obtain the important information needed in way of evidence in his court case for his against Madigan. The pair of them winds up going through transcripts of interview Edgerton had set up with Madigan and tape recordings collected in way of evidence to convict Madigan of the robbery. Then Gary gets tired and gets Danni to go and make a phone call for him while he slips out the front door while she’s not looking and makes and dash for it later checking himself into a Psychiatric institution.

Danni later learns of this news while visiting Bryan Grays office at HQ and on learning of his admitting himself at Memorial Park Hospital goes there straight away.

Danni: Gary, how are you doing?
Gary: Well I’m crazy.
Danni: (Laughs) Crazy like a fox.
Gary: (laughs) Yeah! Well they’ve got great security here and you don’t have to go anywhere if you don’t want to.
Danni: So you’re going to stay here forever.
Gary: No! Just… Just need some time to think. Sorry I ran out.
Danni: You made me look a bit stupid.
Gary: Yeah! Well it couldn’t be helped. It’s all just sort of umm, sort of getting to me, you know. I can taste the quicksand.
Danni: it’s almost over.
Gary: NO IT ISN’T!! Madigan goes down they’re gong to burn me and they won’t even look back.
Danni: No they won’t. There’s protection for operatives.
Gary: THERE ISN’T! I’m sorry! I’m sorry, the reason I left the force in the first place is because someone tipped y identity to Madigan. All that great work you reckon I did. How much protection do you think it offered me?…None!
Danni: Gary, what happened to you is awful, awful! But letting Madigan walk away at this trial. That’s not going to fix it.
Gary: It makes no difference. He found me before. He’ll do it again and this time you and your mates won’t be around to protect me. Like you weren’t around to protect Bruce, remember! If I testify, whether he’s in prison or not, Madigan’ll whack me.

Danni gets a call on her mobile from church to say Gary’s just had visitors waiting outside the hospital.

Gary:…He’s found me hasn’t he? Shit! Madigan’s found me. You expect me to walk out of this place.
Danni: Gary, I know what where asking you to do and I don’t want to have to ask it but really what’s the alternative? Rollover!
Gary: It’s a long time ago, the banks insurance is paid out. The Robbery, everybody’s forgotten about it, it’s nothing.
Danni: Like the murder of Bruce Fagget. You were an uncover cop, Gary, a bloody good one! That meant you took risks. You risked your own life, why? My bet is it’s the same reason the rest of us do it, because we believe in it. You can’t of stopped believing, not totally.
Gary: Witness protections, bye, bye Dandenong’s. I’ll be looking over my shoulder for the rest of my life.
Danni: But no regrets.
Gary: Well if I’m going to make an appearance in court you better get me a suit.

Back at the factory after Edgerton’s court appearance.

Pete: You did well!
Danni: Hmm, What’s the situation with our buyer?
Pete: He pulled out.
Danni: Why?
Pete: White Ants!
Danni: White Ants!
Pete: According to the builder’s report the place is riddled with them. A major infestation, apparently and until we get the problem treated we’re going to be flat out finding anyone who wants to buy it.
Danni: Did we know about this?
Pete: Don’t know, we didn’t get a builders report.
Danni: Ah!
Pete: Look’s like we’re stuck with it for a while.
Danni: Yeah! Stuck with the past, aye!
