Good Morning Australia
This is the interview with Rachael and Ian on GMA. I transcribed it for those of you that didn’t get to
see it. It isn’t exact wording, as it is a live show and a lot of the speech is overlapped and there is a few umm’s and arr’s!
Interview with Ian Stenlake and Rachael Beck.
Bert-“Ladies and gentlemen, be upstanding and welcome the bride and groom, Rachael Beck and Ian Stenlake.” (They enter, Rachael is wearing her wedding dress and Ian is wearing what he wore on the wedding day also. Bert gives Rach a kiss and Ian and Rachael sit down together opposite Bert.) “Look at that.” (Rachael twirls around to face the audience.) “Aren’t they just the most beautiful couple the world has ever seen?”
Rach-“Hello!”
Bert-“What a beautiful gown, although its not the first time I’ve seen it.”
Rach-“Yeah I did do a world tour when I came back, yes.”
Bert-“And how are you Ian?” (Shakes his hand.)
Ian-“Fantastic!”
Bert-“You lucky man and you lucky girl! When you get it back on, [dress] all the memories start to flood back?”
Rach-“Oh absolutely! We were actually crying a lot of the ceremony, we arrived on Harley’s, and all I could see was Ian and his best man blubbering!”
Bert-“But a great day, a wonderful day, according to all reports. What was the date again?”
Rach-“The 20th of January, 2001.”
Bert-“So that was on the Saturday, or the Sunday?”
Rach-“On the Saturday.”
Bert-“On the Saturday… Just, just tell us how you guys met…I’ll leave that up to…[Ian].
Ian-“Yeah geez…about 6 years ago, we met at a umm an industry party I guess you’d call it. Richard Roxburg had thrown a party to raise some money for his theatre trip. And we literally met over a crowded room. I had no idea who she was…One of the only people in Australia who hadn’t seen ‘Hey Dad’ at that stage!”
Rach- (Laughs!)
Ian-“But umm, we had mutual friends that umm we discovered, and it all happened!”
Bert-“And for you Rachael? When you first saw him?”
Rach-“Well I saw him, I saw this…pretty cool…man… dancing!”
Ian-“Oh right and where was I?
(Audience laughs!)
Rach-“He was…was dancing on the dance floor, which he hardly ever does.” (They lock hands.) “Just returned from over seas and looking fabulous, so I sorta danced a little bit closer. And in fact the first thing we did was just sorta look at each other and go “hello!” and hug…and it I could see this aura around him. And then I…left the party!” (Laughs!) “And he called me!”
Bert-“Next day?”
Rach-“Oh?”
Ian-“There was a lot of debate about that, you know, talk amongst the mates. Do you ring the next day, is that too keen? (Laughing from everyone) or the day after?”
Rach-“Yeah, 2 days!”
Ian-“I got it right anyway!”
Bert-“Yeah you could react to quick-that’s right you got it right anyway! I umm mentioned before that you’d been married 8 times in the past 3 months and so forth, and with the umm close of the Sound of Music, on Sunday night in Adelaide after such a successful season. Now do you feel something’s out of your life?”
Rach-“umm.”
Bert-“Or not enough time.”
Rach-“In terms of umm the Sound of Music finishing?”
Bert-“Yeah.”
Rach-“I could’ve done it longer, definitely I just had the most magical, magical time.”
(They show clips with her singing in the ‘Sound of Music’.)
Rach-“Um but it was such a gift, to do it! I could definitely do it again but of course I’m looking forward to um moving on as well (?)”
Bert-“When you have a look at the footage here, at the sound of music, I think that the great thing that’s occurred, here in Australia with both yourself and Lisa [McCune] you’ve made it your own thing. And when you came into the company, obviously you have friends already in it but you ar left the company with everyone as your friend. And I suppose for that to happen to an Actor, to all of a sudden find new friends, new chums, new work mates and then know that where ever you see each other you’ve got that common bond of both having done a great show. When we said good bye on Sunday I couldn’t stay for the celebration I had to catch a plane out of Adelaide and come back to Melbourne for this show on Monday morning. But umm I thanked a few people; the producers asked me too say a few words after the curtain. But the one thing I didn’t mention and I really regret it, but I can do it now. I think one of the real secrets of the success of this production of the Sound of Music, many shows over the years have had great voices, but with the ensemble, the female ensemble we had, we had the combination of these voices…
Rach-“mm”
Bert-“The likes of which I don’t think we’ll ever hear again, would you agree?
Rach-“Oh I agree, every single night listening to the opening and especially the closing, I would get tingles, and almost be moved to tears, because it was so clear and ethereal and, oh and it was just magical.
Bert-“Beautiful girls.”
Rach-“Magical…and beautiful girls of course.
Bert-“Ian for you its back to work of course, when I last saw you on the weekend you, you weren’t feeling all that well you had a touch of the flu or something?”
Rach-“Yeah I think I just pushing things a little bit hard in the last couple of weeks. My body was saying have a little bit of a relax. Ah feeling a lot better this week.
Rach-“He just needed his girl with him!”
Bert-“Well of course because you were separated.
Rach-“Oh yeah you know!”
Ian-“Just couldn’t party till 4 only till 2.
Bert-“I suppose Ian, you say it must have been pretty hectic for you, umm because your back shooting ‘Stingers’ again and the wife was away in another Capital City.”
Ian-“Well that’s right yeah well we were commuting? And I haven’t really been here at home here in Melbourne for any more than 3 days at a time, for 6 months.
(Camera shows a close up of them holding hands!)
Bert-“You’re a Melbourne boy, Ian originally?
Ian-“No, I’m a Queenslander originally. But we’ve been down here, coming up three years.”
Bert-“Right are you going to make Melbourne your home, or where the work is?”
Rach-“Well we don’t know, well as you know we are constantly travelling I suppose we’ll go where ever the work is. What do you think?”
Ian-“Yeah. We’ve gotta follow the work I think.”
Rach-“We haven’t really discussed it.”
Bert-“Now that you mention it, do it now!”
Rach-“Okay well what do you think darling?”
Ian-“(Hand gestures...) I really-“
Rach-“I rather like, I like Melbourne and Sydney!”
Ian-“I like Melbourne…”
Bert-“The important thing is to try and stay in the same City at the one time!”
Rach-“Oh yes, definitely.”
Bert-“Singing in the rain we mention, looking forward to that? It’s a real diversion isn’t it, from the Sound of Music.
Rach-“Oh fantastic to dance again and…um and work with Todd, and David.” (Shows clips of the Production ‘Singin’ in the Rain.) “Oh there ya go!”
Bert-“Lets have a little look together, this here’s a promotion. For the upcoming production.”
(Audience watches the promotion, then claps.)
Bert-“Terrific! So when does it open? When do you start rehearsals for a start.”
Rach-“Ah rehearsals start on the 20th of March. And ah, I think it opens on the 6th of May.
Bert-“In Melbourne?”
Rach-“ In at Star City, in Sydney. “
Bert-“At the lyric, oh no at….at”
Rach-“At Star City. Then it comes to the Regent following ‘Annie’.
Bert-“Wonderful, you mind if we have a little look through these?”
Rach-“Oh yes have a flick though!”
Bert-“These are from the album, these are the ones that we can show you! Look at that, beautiful one there, there’s Rachael by…herself.” (Shows a picture of Rachael on the beach, by herself, in her wedding dress. Her arms up near her veil.) (Then shows a picture of Toni Colette, Rachael’s best friend, and Ian and Rachael with their arms around each other.) “Toni Colette!”
Rach-“Yes, she flew in from LA she’s been shooting a film with Ben Affleck!”
Bert-“She’s wonderful, ‘your awful Muriel’.”
Rach-“Yes!”
(Shows a photo of Rachael with her Father.)
Bert-“There you go!”
Rach-“Ohhhhh”
Ian-“Remember that fellow?”
Rach-“Beautiful Dad.”
Bert-“Oh well that’s, of course, is he talking to me about (word not caught) Cause I sent a romantic note to your Mum!
Rach-“I know.”
Rach-“Na…it’s all forgiven!”
Bert-“John isn’t it?”
Rach-“Yeah, yeah.”
Bert-“If you’re watching this morning, handsome devil!”
Rach-“Laughs!” (Now shows a picture of Ian carrying Rachael down a steep hill, with loose dirt, and the wedding party, following.)
Bert-“Trying to get away from the wedding group were you there, what’s the story?”
Rach-“Oh trying to run away!”
Ian-“Chasing us down hill!”
Bert-“Ahh there’s a nice one, what are you doing there?”
Rach-“Washing my feet!”
Ian-“Yeah washing the sand off her feet.”
(Picture of Ian leaning down near Rachael’s feet, nighttime.)
Bert-“Oh, what a day to go for a swim, on your wedding day!”
Rach-“Beautiful Home Bay (?) You shoulda seen my dress…”
(Shows a picture of Rachael and Ian with the wedding cake.)
Bert-“Ahh, now that’s my favourite shot!”
Rach-“Beautiful cake wasn’t it?
Bert-“Yeah, beautiful shot.”
(Shows a photo of the rings.)
Rach-“Now they’re the rings.”
Bert-“Oh yeah, they’re lovely.”
Ian-“Our friend ah Sam Dagrostino (?) took those shots, he’s a great friend great photographer.
Bert-“He’s done a terrific job!”
Rach-“Hasn’t he!”
Bert-“There we see the ah, the group.”
(A photo is shown, of the wedding party walking along the beach when the sun is setting.)
Rach-“The group.”
Ian-“Look at that.”
Bert-“Is Michael there? Michael ahh...”
Rach-“Yes, he’s, he is in the blue, and my sister Kate, is on the right hand side, and my friend Yvette.”
Bert-“Anyone there we need to know?”
(Shows a photo of the ‘Stingers’ Cast, Anita in a bright blue, fancy top and skirt, with her hair pulled back, Ian and Rachael, Peter in a suit and Tie, and Kate in a blue dress with a black over top, and her hair pulled back.) (Peter Phelps has his eyes shut!)
Ian-“Well...”
Rach-“Nar you probably wouldn’t know them!” (Laughs!)
(Muffled conversation and laughter.)
Rach-“Peter Phelps is looking a bit tired there.”
Ian-“Peter Phelps is asleep standing up!”
Rach-“That was Peter Phelps!”
Ian-“Yeah he was asleep look!”
Rach-“Very tired! And there’s Kate Kendall…”
Bert-“He’s being held up there isn’t he!”
(Shot of Rachael playing golf, Ian holding the flag and the wedding party looking on.)
Rach-“Now the boys wanted to do that…”
Bert-“You’re having a game of golf?”
(Few muffled comments and laughter)
Rach-“I know, we did it all. We did it all!”
Ian-“Got a hole in one.”
Bert-“Now they spared no expense on the reception, the whole deal, but the transport was just…!”
(Shows a picture of Rachael in her wedding dress, on her way to the ceremony, on the back of a Harley.)
Bert-“You’re a beautiful couple, not just in appearance but in nature and character and all of that sort of thing.
Rach-“Thank you.”
Bert-“We just ah, wish you well. Everyone here on Good Morning Australia.”
Rach-“Thank you so much.” (Shakes his hand.)
Bert-“And thank you Rach, bless you. Ian!” (They shake hands.)
Bert-“And thanks for coming in, and thanks for being such great sports too. And wearing the beautiful outfits.”
(The audience is clapping.)
Ian-“Oh pleasure.”
Bert-“Just a little, now I know you don’t normally have a drink, Ian, but maybe you’ll rethink for this occasion.” (He hands him a bottle of champagne (?) And some flowers for you Rachael.”
Rach-“Oh Bert thank you so much!”
Bert-“Please thank, Rachael Beck and Ian Stenlake, we wish them well always!”
