The History of St. John's

St. John's history of Christian ministry dates back to our precursor, the Jordan Union Sunday School, which was formed in 1858. Named for the Jordan Creek, the Sunday School met in the Sterner School House at 5th and Pershing Blvd., Whitehall until 1870. In 1870 the St. John's Union Chapel was completed at 3rd and Chestnuts Sts., Whitehall. The name St. John's was in honor of St. John's Mickleys Church where many of the Sunday School participants held their church membership. The first service in the chapel was a Christmas Festival Service. Preaching services were held bi-monthly, alternating in English and German.

On June 19, 1902, St. John's Reformed Church was organized by 124 charter members. They called the Rev. Thomas H. Krick to be the first pastor. He served until March 30, 1930. Initially, we shared the facilities of St. John's Chapel with St. John's Lutheran Congregation which was organized August 7, 1902 with 144 charter members. In 1928 St. John's Reformed Congregation was granted a Charter of Incorporation by the State of Pennsylvania. On March 4, 1929 we sold our share of the St. John's Chapel to St. John's Lutheran church for $15,000. Ground breaking for our present sanctuary, located at 575 Grape St., occurred on August 18, 1929. The first worship in the new church building was in the fellowship hall on December 21, 1930. The first worship in the sanctuary itself was a Thanksgiving Service on November 29, 1931. September 20, 1960 proved a sad day in the life of St. John's. Lightning struck the organ chamber during an early morning storm. Damage to the sanctuary totaled $70,000. Fortunately the sanctuary was returned to its former glory and was rededicated, with a new organ, on March 26, 1961 (Palm Sunday).
