Conversions
Converting from one unit to another within the English system is more complicated than making conversions in the metric system. You may be able to do the conversions in your head, but you are much better off if you learn the procedure. The problems will get harder, so if you don't understand the procedure, you'll get stuck later with problems. This procedure is the same as the one that you will use to convert from English to metric units.
Step#1: Write down the number that you were given in the problem:
4 gallons | x | = | ||
Step#2: Use the volume table above to write down the conversion factor (1 gal. = 4 qt.). You need to watch your units here. You have gallons on top (from 4 gal.) so when you write the conversion factor, you need to have gallons on bottom.
4 gallons | x | 4 quarts | = | |
1 gallon |
Step#3: Now multiply all of the numbers on top of the line and hit equals on your calculator. Then divide that number by the number on bottom and hit equals. Now you have your answer. In this case, the gallon units cancelled, so the units for your answer are in quarts.
4 gallons | x | 4 quarts | = | 16 quarts |
1 gallon |
Now try working these example problems in your notebook.
1. 80 ounces = ? pounds 2. 5 quarts = ? fluid ounces 3. 12 inches = ? yards 4. 11 gallons = ? pints 5. 10,000 feet = ? miles 6. 12 cups = ? fluid ounces |
Check your answers. If you made any mistakes, you need to rework those problems.
