The addition of a Crematorium and Chapel, established December of 1998, ensures that St. John's will provide clients with a full range of contemporary services in the future. COMMUNITY HISTORY St. John's Norway occupies approximately 35 acres at the northwest corner of Kingston Road and Woodbine Avenue. In 1853 Charles Coxwell Small deeded three acres of his land to the Rt. Reverend John Strachan, Lord Bishop of Toronto, for the construction of an Anglican church and churchyard to serve the rapidly growing community of Norway and subsequently Toronto. Over the years the Cemetery grounds have expanded several times reaching its current size in 1925. Today the Cemetery has more than 50,000 gravesites and nearly 80,000 interments. INVESTING IN THE FUTURE St. John's Norway operates on a nonprofit basis. All monies received are used in the day to day operations, grounds and building maintenance, improvements, and general upkeep of the Cemetery. Any surplus revenue is reinvested to improve services and beautify the property providing a pleasant green space. SERVICES OFFERED St. John's Norway provides a complete range of services, cremation, chapel, interment and memorialization, that meet the cultural and financial needs of each individual or family. All visitors are encouraged to commemorate the life lived in their own unique way. CREMATION With the addition of the Crematorium and Chapel, full cremation services can now be provided for the community and greater Toronto area. CHAPEL Our nondenominational Chapel was built to accommodate all services associated with cremation and seats approximately fifty people. CHAPEL NICHES The Niches on the exterior wall of the Chapel will accommodate two urns. They are faced with granite and a bronze wreath is available to memorialize individuals. CREMATION INTERMENT St John's offers a choice of niches for above ground inurnment. Inground interment can also take place in your existing family lot, a new lot, or in the Berkeley Cremation Garden. Cremated remains may also be scattered at the Eastwood Scattering Garden or in your family lot. CASKET INTERNMENT St. John's has a varied choice of inground lots available throughout the Cemetery. MEMORIALIZATION Markers and monuments are a lasting memorial to your loved one. A variety of flat markers, in granite or bronze, and a wide selection of upright monuments may be purchased through the Cemetery office. RESTORATION Cleaning, highlighting and resetting of memorials can be determined and taken care of through the Cemetery office. INSCRIPTIONS Existing monuments and flat markers can be updated as required. St. John's utilizes highly skilled artisans to match existing lettering and graphic components. This work is frequently done onsite. MEMORIAL TREES You may dedicate a tree to the memory of a loved one. A small bronze plaque on a granite pillow is placed at the base of the tree. A variety of suitable trees are available for your selection. Memorial trees also provide St. John's with natural greenery while offering an added source of beauty and enjoyment for everyone. WREATHS Colorful seasonal wreaths and vase bouquets are available for purchase at the Cemetery office. ANNUAL GARDENS St. John's provides garden services to enhance the appearance of individual lots. Gardens are planted in the early part of June; weather permitting, with a wide range of colorful flowers. This service includes planting, fertilizing, weeding and regular watering through to September. INTERMENT RIGHTS Maintenance of interment is crucial and must be kept current. The Interment Rights owner has complete authority over all burials and memorialization of their lot. When the owner of the interment rights dies, the executor/trix of their estate should transfer these rights to a survivor. A nominal fee is charged for this service and a new Interment Rights Certificate is issued. ADMINISTRATION St. John's Cemetery and Crematorium operates under a comprehensive set of bylaws which have been approved by the Provincial Government. A copy of these bylaws may be obtained from the office.
