The York Church Scene

York Baptist Church
YBC offers a warm welcome, good fellowship and sound Bible teaching. Our congregations are comprised of a wide range of people. There are many opportunities for students to get involved in the life of the church, as YBC is involved in many areas of ministry and evangelism. There is already an established student group, and student meetings are held after the Sunday evening services.

Calvary Chapel
Calvary is best described as a 'free church'. The emphasis of its services lies in the teaching of God's Word. The worship is upbeat and modern. It has a very relaxed atmosphere, is warm and friendly with a large student population, but a wide range of age groups do attend.

York City Church
York City Church is a lively church that meets in the chapel of York St. John's campus. It is a church that is part of the 'Newfrontiers' network of churches. Several students attend City Church from YSJ and York Uni. There are also several families and children in the church. The Sunday morning service normally lasts about an hour-and-a-half. It consists of a lively time of praise and worship lead by guitar or keyboard where people are encouraged to share about what God is saying to us. The worship is followed by an inspiring Bible-based sermon.

City Church actively encourages people to become involved in a cell group. This is a chance to get to know others within the church, to start to build friendships with them and to be 'spiritually fed' during the week. Some cells are lead by students for students, while some are a mixture of 'adults' and students. You are welcome to go along and try any cell.

Please feel to chat to Hannah Parkes if you would like to know more about the church, cell groups or if you would like me to meet you before church so that you don't have to go in alone!

Elim Pentecostal Church
Elim Pentecostal Church, York has a mainly contemporary style of worship and excellent teaching, mostly by the Pastor Graham Hutchinson. The morning service is "Café Church", held in the adjoining coffee shop. Coffee and tea are available during the service and people are invited in off the street. The service is more informal and often involves discussion groups. The evening service is more traditional, with a larger congregation. There is currently no student group but there is a selection of cell groups. There is also currently a series on the Christian response to Islam, help on Thursday nights.

York Evangelical Church
York Evangelical Church (YEC) is a small independent church with a big emphasis on God's Word. We meet in a school on the other side of York (past Clifford's tower) both Morning and Evening. Student lunch is often provided (BONUS!) and the preaching is Bible based and relevant. The church is currently actively looking for a Pastor so YEC is at an exciting time. I recommend you come and 'try' it at least once. It's also a nice walk to wake you up on Sunday mornings!!

St. Michael le Belfrey
St. Michael le Belfrey is a lively, evangelical Anglican church. There are three services on a Sunday at 9am, 11am & 7pm. The 7pm service is the most popular amongst students, but the other services are well worth a visit too. All the services have good Bible teaching and lively, usually band-led worship. There are regular student events including student lunches, which are delicious! There are lots of opportunities to get involved with the life of the church including being involved with the worship & helping with the children's work.
