Diary 2002 Tuesday 5th March Students taking part in the Comenius Lingua project meet with the Lord Mayor of Cork, Mr Tom O'Driscoll at 12:00 in the City Hall. Thursday 14th March Group assemble in Cork airport at 12:40. Depart from Cork on our journey to Brakel via Dublin and Dusseldorf. Train from Dusseldorf to Paderborn where we are collected by teachers from Adolph Kolping Berufskollege and taken to our accommodation in Brakel. Friday 15th March Breakfast at 8:30, arrive in college, Adolph Kolping Berufskolleg at 9:30. Period 3 and 4 with Mr. Grone (English). Meet students from the college in Brakel and discuss approach to the project. Period 5 and 6 official welcome meeting with college Principal in the main hall. After welcome meeting Rudolf brings students on a tour of the college. Afternoon visit to centre of Brakel with students from class SPE 0 A, including a walk to the main square to see the town hall built in Weser renaissance style, the parish church of St. Michael built in Romanesque style in 1161 with gothic east choir of 1338 and baroque organ doors by the painter Johann George Rudolphi of 1683. Dinner for the group at a steak house in Brakel. Saturday 16th March Full day trip by car to the town of Lemgo with it's beautiful timber framed houses and pedestrian shopping area. Afternoon visit to the Externsteine, a highly picturesque natural rock formation set in a large forestry park, and to the Hermann monument. Hermann is said to have defeated the Roman legions at this location. Spent some time wander around the area and climbed to the viewing platform near the top of the monument for a view of the surrounding countryside. Sunday 17th Full day trip to Bochum. Breakfast at 7:00. Travel by train to the city of Bochum. Morning visit to the German museum of mining which included a trip 20 metres beneath the surface to view the mine shafts and then to the top of the drilling platform for a stunning view of the city. After lunch we take in a performance of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Starlight Express in a theatre specially built to house this show. Following the show we walk to Bochum Zoo for a short visit. Dinner in Bochum before our return train journey to Brakel. Monday 18th March Breakfast at 7:00, then on to the college, continue project work, period 3 and 4 Mr. Pagel (data processing), period 5 and 6 computer room. Afternoon tour to the city of Detmold. Detmold was founded around 1260 and has more than 500 historic monuments of different ages. Visited the palace and spent time walking around the town. Many students managed to fit in some shopping. Tuesday 19th Breakfast 7:00, then on to the college, group work, period 3 and 4 Mr. Grone, period 5 and 6 Mr. Frischemeier. (data processing) First letters of project completed, some students begin work on cultural and educational pages. Afternoon visit to FSB metalwork company in Brakel. Here students are taken on a informative guided tour of the factory which manufactures quality door handles and is the largest employer in Brakel. Wednesday 20th March Morning: trip to the city of Paderborn. Rudolf conducts a guided tour which includes visit to the 13th century cathedral which has a famous window in the cloister of two hares who share three ears, the Rathaus (town hall) built in Weser renaissance style in 1613 – 1616, the hall type chapel of St. Bartholomew which dates to 1017. There is a market which takes place each Wednesday in the shadows of the cathedral tower and the modern shopping area which stretches from the railway station to the main town square. Some students visit the Byzantine exhibition while others go to the main shopping area. Afternoon guided tour of the largest information technology museum in the world the Heinz Nixdorf Museum. Thursday 21st Breakfast at 7:00, then on to the college, final project work and formal presentation of the project to the principal, staff and students of Adolph Kolping Berufskollege. Farewell speech by the principal and presentation of gifts from Cork to staff involved with the project. Afternoon guided tour of Hoxter, led by Ute, with it’s timber-framed buildings giving a unique glimpse into medieval history. Many of the buildings bear the classical motifs of the Weser renaissance style including the beautiful 13th century town hall. Free time in the town for shopping or short walk to the 9th century abbey of Corvey. Friday 22nd March Breakfast at 8:00. Depart for Koblenz by train. Afternoon free to walk around Koblenz an attractive city caught in-between the Rhine and Moselle and surrounded by four low mountain ranges. The city can trace it’s origins to a Roman military camp established here around 10BC. River traffic is very light as the Rhine and Mosel are both in flood. Some students visit the Lohr-center a 130 store mall. Evening visit to the city's popular Irish Bar. Meeting with students from our college who are in Koblenz on a Leonardo project. Saturday 23rd Free day in Koblenz. Time for shopping or for a visit to Basilika St. Kastor, Rathaus, Kurfurstliches schlob and other attractions in the city. Sunday 24th March Morning in Koblenz. Flooding has subsided so a visit to the Deutsches Eck is possible. Also walked to the Weindorf. Afternoon travelled by train to Bonn. Visit the Beethoven Haus, the birthplace of the composer and the grave of Schumann. Also went to see the Munster Basilika and the beautiful Rathaus. Monday 25th Full day tour to Cologne the largest city in the Rhine-Westphalia district. Visited to the famous cathedral. Building began in 1248 in the French Gothic style but was suspended in 1560 due to lack of money. In the 1820’s the original architectural plans were found and in 1880 the cathedral was finally completed. It is a UNESCO world heritage site. For an incredible view climbed the 509 steps up the south tower to the base of the steeple passing the 24 tonne Peter Bell on the way, the largest working bell in the world. Cologne also has an impressive collection of Romanesque churches built between 1150 and 1250. Tuesday 26th Day in Dusseldorf, the capital of North Rhine-Westphelia. Visit to the famous Konigsallee district and to the Altstadt. Late afternoon departure from Dusseldord for our return journey via Dusseldorf and Dublin to Cork. Wednesday 27th
