Tuesday 4th November
2003
Group meeting at 06:00 in Cork airport. Depart from Cork on flight EI
710 to London Heathrow. Depart Heathrow for Berlin on flight BA984
at 13:10. Arrive in Berlin (Tegel) at 15:55. Transfer to Berlin Zoo
station. Train to Brakel. Arrival in Brakel approx 23:00.
Wednesday 5th November
Morning: Tour of Adolph Kolping Berufskolleg, Brakel. Short meeting
with German students and split up into groups to begin project work
Afternoon: Walking tour of the town with German students. Free time
in Brakel. Irish group meeting to discuss project.
Thursday 6th November
Morning: Tour of FSB factory in Brakel (09:30). Visit to
showrooms and production area. After returning to college, continue
project work, present Cultural/Heritage work on Cork completed to date to
German students, discussion on this work, begin translation process.
Afternoon: Field trip to Detmold, visit to the castle (guided tour)
and time to explore the towns other attractions.
Friday 7th November
Morning: Tour of traditional local brewery, Schlobbrauerei.
Continue project work. Begin typing of translated pages.
Afternoon: Visit to Heinz Nixdorf Museum, Paderborn (guided tour at
15:00) This is the largest Information Technology museum in the world.
Saturday 8th November
Full day: Travel to the city of Cologne by train. Visit the
cathedral and roman excavation/museum. Free time to visit other
attractions.
Sunday 9th November
Full day: Travel to the city of Kassel by train. Time to
explore the cities attractions.
Monday 10th November
Morning: Morning: Comenius week presentation of project work to
local political and commercial leaders. Students of Istituto
Tecnico Commerciale e Industriale Statale Primo Levi, Genoa and Adolph-Kolping-Berufskolleg,
Brakel will also make presentations. There will be an opportunity for
students to meet and discuss their work after the conclusion of the formal
presentation. Continue project work, discussion on field trips to date,
brief report.
Afternoon: Field trip to Hoxter and to the monastery of Corvey.
Guided tour of Corvey at 15:00.
Tuesday 11th November
Morning: Continue project work, check translation and typing
for errors, prepare presentation.
Afternoon: Field trip to Paderborn. Visit to the cathedral and time
to explore the town
Wednesday 12th November
Morning: Final preparation for presentation of project,
presentation to be given by each group of work completed to date and plans
for the next phase of the project in Ireland
Afternoon: Free in Brakel or Hoxter
Thursday 13th November
Morning: Travel by train to Berlin. Check in to Pension
Berolina, Stuttgarter Platz 17 Berlin, DE10627 in the Charlottenburg
district.
Afternoon: Free to visit the Ku’damm area, including Europe’s
biggest department store, KaDeWe and the famous Europa shopping centre.
Also time to see the ruined tower of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial church.
Left unrepaired as a memorial to the destruction caused to the city during
the Second World War.
Friday 14th November
Full Day: Berlin City Tour. Stops to include Potsdamer Platz
with the remains of the Berlin wall, Berlin Jewish Museum, Checkpoint
Charlie, Berlin Cathedral, Unter den Linden, Reichstag and the Brandenburg
gate.
Saturday 15th November
Morning: Students to identify main tourist attractions based on
yesterday’s tour, discussion on marketing of these attractions. Further
opportunity to explore these tourist attractions.
Afternoon: Free to visit attractions in Berlin or for shopping.
Sunday 16th November
Full Day: Visit to the palaces at Potsdam. Time to explore the
Schlob Sanssouci the summer retreat of Frederick the Great and now a
UNESCO world heritage site. Also the Sanssouci Park with it’s famous
Chinese Tea House of 1757. Attend evening performance of the musical
“Cats”, sung in German, Potsdamer Platz.
Monday 17th November
Early morning transfer to Tegel airport in Berlin. Flight BA 991 to
London Heathrow. Arrive in Heathrow 11:40. Depart Heathrow for Cork on
flight EI 715 at 14:35. Arrive in Cork 16:00.
