St. Lomans, Mullingar ... 1-6
Mullingar Shamrocks ... 1-3

History was made at Castletown-Geoghan on Friday, September 1986 when St. Lomans won their first championship since entering underage football and appropriately, it was great rivals, Mullingar Shamrocks who provided the opposition in a memorable Under 12 Final that fully lived up to pre-match expectations.

SHAMROCKS BEST SPELL Lomans won the toss and elected to play with the wind in the first half. They were first to settle with Kenny Lyons giving early indications of his superb talent at midfield. After three minutes, Gerry O`Brien opened Lomans account with a well taken point from the fourteen yard line. They continued to press, but Shamrock's full back, Derek Daly was playing brilliantly, and thwarted many fine scoring efforts by "The Blues".

Despite the fact that Lomans were playing with the wind, it was Shamrocks who were in the driving seat, prompted brilliantly by Barry Maguire, Sean Corroon, Oisin Masterson and J.J. Matthews. St. Lomans were finding it difficult to stay in touch and by the end of the quarter Shamrocks had raced into a four point lead.

Inspired by Kenny Lyons, Lomans gradually got back into contention, but scoring was proving to be a difficult art, against a tight marking Shamrocks defence.

The turning point came just one minute before the break when a brilliant move, initiated by Lyons who split the Shamrocks defence with a superb pass to Alan Graham who found the unmarked Gerry O`Brien and from close range, O`Brien rifled the ball to the back of the net.

The half time scoreline read: St. Lomans 1-3, Mullingar Shamrocks 1-2

SECOND HALF

Despite playing against the wind in the second half, Lomans controlled the game, indeed Shamrocks only scored one point in this period, while Lomans added three to their tally and when referee, John Mulligan, called for the ball, Lomans were celebrating a famous victory.
