Ball dominates bat as Stonor lose to Henley :

Saturday night's thunderstorms had thankfully missed the Stonor ground, and Stonor hosted the Henley club in a new fixture on Sunday in warm sunshine.

The pitch and outfield were in superb condition, but the underlying dampness was probably always going to be in the bowlers' favour. Nonetheless, having

won the toss, the visitors elected to bat, no doubt looking for some early season time in the middle.

The opening pair gave their team a solid start before Pratley was trapped leg before by Neil Brown with the score on 37. Without addition to the score

Cussan was beautifully deceived by Dan Fennell's left arm spin, and when Ayres and Thorburn became Brown's second and third victims, the visitors were

53 for 4. Kendrick began to build a defiant innings, but when Dennison was caught behind for nought off an away swinging delivery from the inspired

Brown, at 58 for 5 the Henley side were not feeling comfortable. Satin and Hendrick began to consolidate, and unfortunately for the home side, they gave

Satin 2 chances in the field, before he finally fell to Dan Fennell as the pressure for runs increased. Kendrick reached a good 50, and he and Gould got the

score up to 138 at tea time. The visitors must have thought about going on after tea, but the declaration was made and Stonor could take great credit for a

good job done in the field in restricting the target to an achievable figure.

Stonor got off to a stuttering start, Martin Fennell being well caught behind by Thorburn standing up to Gould with the score on only 7. Gary Oleinik

continued his form of the previous week and pushed the score along to 68 with successive partnerships when he became the 5th wicket to fall, for 33.

useful 18 from Powell kept the momentum going, but it was the pyrotechnics from Brown that both confused the visitors and encouraged the home side.

When he fell for a rapid and highly valuable 25 the hosts were within 30 runs of victory with overs in hand. A draw was of no interest, and Hunt and

Langley did their best to push the score along, but the field settings were not in their favour, and Hunt was run out as the pressure mounted. When the last

wicket fell on 118, Stonor had come up short by 20 runs in a well contested match played in good spirit.
