Stonor visited Radley College on Sunday for the away leg of this enjoyable contest, which pits youth versus experience twice a season. On a glorious
afternoon the Radley playing fields were awash with cricketers enjoying their excellent facilities. Having won the toss the Stonor skipper invited the Rustics
to bat on pitch which looked more typical of late summer than mid-May.
The visitors struck early, 13 year old Henry Gibbs taking a comfortable catch from Stonor paceman, Andy Pennell. From the other end John Powell quickly
got in the game bowling Baker with a swinging delivery, and the home team were 2 for 2. Pennell persisted with sharp pace, just off a length, and in a
magnificent spell claimed three further victims, by which time the Radley innings was in tatters. When bowling changes were made, wickets continued to fall,
with newcomer Ashley Agar claiming two wickets. Trombridge, Clarke, and Badeni all put up a good fight and took their chances enabling the hosts to reach
100 before keeper Dan Fennell held a juggling catch to close the innings.
It was unlikely that this would be enough as the Stonor reply was put on a solid footing by Powell and Nigel Allsop, despite some tight bowling, until Allsop
holed out to backward point off Knapp's bowling with the score on 41. Gibbs resisted briefly, but Jordan prevailed and the visitors still needed work to get
their runs. However, despite continued good bowling by the Radley team, Powell and skipper Martin Fennell, under no time pressure, were able to wait for
the bad balls and a comfortable victory was achieved, with Powell just falling short of his fifty. Full marks to the Radley boys for a good fight back, and the
return encounter at Stonor in three weeks time is eagerly awaited.
