Resolute Jones gets draw for Stonor.

Being unfamiliar with new opponents Sunningwell’s strengths, and having a team stocked
with bowlers, Stonor elected to field first on another glorious afternoon. Powell and
D. Fennell opened up with a very tight spell of tidy seam bowling, which early on induced
a run out to dispatch Himpson. Jones, playing his first game for Stonor, after a nervous
start, continued the pressure, and deservedly took 2 wickets, including that of Lovell who
was beginning to look in command. Hopkins, at the other end came on to produce an
excellent spell of 6 overs in which he took 3 wickets for only 6 runs. At this point the
visitors were in disarray, and the Stonor skipper generously changed the attack to give
debutants Edwards and Hodkinson an opportunity to bowl. Hodkinson, whilst occasionally
loose, did get the wicket of Bolton just as he was going well, and Edwards gave away a
miserly 3 runs in his spell. Stonor showed even more generosity of spirit when Fulford-
Dobson bowled a couple of rusty overs which benefited both the visitors’ score and their
morale. Thus were Sunningwell able to get to 119 as their last wicket fell on the stroke
of tea.
Tea break discussions naturally abounded with cautionary tales of chasing low scores,
must take the challenge seriously, don’t do anything silly, etc. To their credit the
Sunningwell opening bowlers bowled a very good line and length, but that didn’t explain
why Stonor were quickly 15 for 4! (At this point the earlier generosity to Sunningwell
seemed misplaced.) Powell briefly looked like he was going to restore order, but he too
went down, and Nicholson flickered brightly until he got a faint edge. D Fennell flirted
outside off stump once too often and he was caught at point. Enter Allsop and Jones,
who, together, looked like creating a chance to win, not just to save the game.
Jones trusted his young eye and smote some lusty blows, and Allsop eagerly joined
in the pursuit. Unfortunately his younger partner ran him into the ground and he was
meekly run out whilst falling out of his crease with exhaustion. Hodkinson entered the
fray and defended admirably until the last ball of the penultimate over. One wicket left
and 14 needed. Jones was on strike for the last over, and under strict instructions to
BLOCK. And block he did right up to the last ball, when he couldn’t resist a little shimmy
down the pitch to play back a full toss, which he did successfully. However as he stood
back, a yard out of his crease, to admire his work, silly mid on saw his chance and missed.
Stonor had managed to draw a game they should have won but probably deserved to lose!
