My 'little' garden started as a 10ftx10ft open spot with grass, cantalopes, and watermelons on ~6in of real dirt over clay. 3 years later its a 20ftx40ftx2ft veggie/fruit patch surrounded by herb and flower beds, rose landscaping around the building, and some melon/gourd patches scattered on the property. Guess my apartment manager rues the day he said 'The more you garden, the less I have to moe so go for it.'
