Part Three
Now was the moment of truth.  Would one evening of reading and practicing with a doll’s head, make Kate a good hairstylist?  Probably not, but Kate figured that Nick was so infatuated with her, that he probably wouldn’t notice anyway.  God, she hoped not.

She looked at him in the mirror, feeling a bit nervous.  “So really Nick, how do you want me to do your hair?”  She was having fun just combing and running her fingers through it.  She was almost wishing that he would change his mind.  He was Nick Carter after all.

“I want you to hack it all off, Kate.  Short all over and spiky on top.  Can you do that?”

She felt the butterflies churn in her stomach.  “Of course I can silly.   This is going to be a piece of cake.  You don’t want to watch do you?”  She fastened a cape loosely around his neck.  “Is that too tight?”

“No, it’s fine.”  He answered.  “Whatever you want me to do, Kate.  Do I need to watch you?”

“No, I think I’d rather surprise you, if that’s okay?”

“Sure, no problem.  Do you mind if I just close my eyes then?  For some reason, I’m really tired.  Not sure why?”  He grinned.

“Oh God, Nick…yes, please.”  She giggled like a schoolgirl, trying to imagine what Nick would say if he knew this was the first haircut she had ever done on a real person.  In her mind, that thought was hilarious.

“What I meant to say is that I’d prefer that you do that.  Just relax.  Take it easy.  Let me work.”  She knew she was rambling.

“Hold on, you’ve done this before haven’t you?”  He suddenly asked, taking her wrist.

“Me?  Of course I have.  Sure.  Many times.  All the time.”

Now and Then.  Sort of.  Never.  Ugh!  If he only knew.

“Okay, well I’m trusting you.   Don’t cut my ear off or anything.”

Kate thought back to her one haircutting lesson and got to work.   She clipped and trimmed for over an hour, her heart lurching with every snip and every strand that landed on the cape he was wearing.  Nick was relaxed as a noodle through the whole thing.  She had to prop his head up every now and then, but she had to admit, it didn’t look bad.  In fact, it looked pretty damn good.  It was short, but he wanted it that way, right?  She scrunched some mousse into it and voila!

She whispered in his ear. Ready for the unveiling. “Nick?  Hey, sleepyhead.  I’m finished with you.  Do you want to see the new you?”  He opened his eyes sleepily and nodded.

“Lay it on me, Kate.” He yawned.

Kate slowly turned the chair around and Nick’s eyes widened in surprise.

“What do you think Nick?  Be honest.  Do you like it?”

Nick laughed as their eyes met in the mirror.  “I look like I just got laid!!!”

Kate smirked.  “Exactly.”
