In 1998, I wrote a short poem called Fallen Angel. At the time, the JonBenet Ramsey case was big in the news. Also, a very close friend of mine's mother had just died of cancer. As such, this poem was dedicated to both of them.
Her tender skin is lifeless
She is beautiful in death
He gentle eyes are closed
She has drawn her final breath
Her family is shattered
To Heaven she now goes
She was a pageant beauty
Now she's done her final show
She's gone to sit beside Him
Beyond the cloudy sky
If we could see to Heaven
We'd see the angels cry
We don't know why it happened
Perhaps we never will
But we know of the tragedy
By her body, cold and still
Now her pain is over
She's been laid in her grave
We'll forever mourn the angel
The one we couldn't save
