Salem High, Friday afternoon, a few mintues before the bell.
"I have your first tests graded class and I have to say, none of the grades are all that well. Luckily, there was a small curve to boost most of the grades."
Mr. Farris' Calculus class gave a collective sigh at the word curve.
"And kudos this week to Chloe Wesley, who scored the highest score on the test." Mr. Farris walked over to Chloe's desk, dropping the test on it. "Keep up the good work Chloe."
"Thanks Mr. Farris," Chloe said, looking down at her perfect score test. He must've given the curve exempt of her score, since she actually studied for the test unlike most of her classmates who were more excited with the fact that Senior year was upon them.
While Farris continued to give out the rest of the tests, Belle scooted over to look at Chloe's score. "I knew it! Perfect score," Belle whispered loud enough for a few people to hear and look over.
Chloe gave her a look to be quiet and Belle whispered sorry, returning back to her desk.
"Calculus is not an easy course folks. If you need help, just ask for it in class, that's what it's for. That's what I'm here for," Farris continued as he passed out the last of the tests. "And don't forget, Section 2.1 and 2.2 homework is due Monday." A second after he finished, the bell rang, dismissing the students for the day as well as the weekend.
"I'll see you at 4:30, Dot.com, right," Belle asked her friend as she packed up her books.
"Yeah, I'll be there," Chloe said. Belle had cheerleading practice after school for two hours every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, after which the two usually met afterwards at Dot.com to discuss their day and unwind.
"Chloe, can you stay a minute," Mr. Farris asked her over the loud noise of chatter and laughter.
"Sure," Chloe replied as she finished packing her own back pack.
"Farris, where's my test," came a voice that Belle knew all to well. She looked up to see Phillip Kiriakis standing at the front of the room with the teacher, his stance laid back and playful as always.
"Mr. Kiriakis. Indeed, I did not return your test because I don't think you would want to see it."
Phillip's face fell at the words. "What do you mean? Where's my test?"
"Phillip, did you even look into your textbook?"
"Of course I looked at it," Phillip said smoothly. Both the teacher and Chloe knew it was a lie though. Phillip Kiriakis, Captain of all sports at Salem High, had little time for books, and it was a known fact he hated any kind of studying, which he felt took away from time better spent preparing for the team's next game.
"Your test tells me differently Phillip. And I know it's just the first one, but you seriously need to pay attention in class, complete the given assignments, and study for the tests."
"Oh come on Farris. I'm only taking this class because my mom made me. I would rather be in home ec," Phillip joked.
"Maybe so Phillip, but you're not. You're here, with me, in my Calculus class. I expect to see your homework on Monday and I certainly expect better on your next test."
"Fine, whatever. Can I go now?"
"No, I'm not finished. There's still the matter of this first test. You did very poorly on it Phillip. But I'm willing to give you a second chance. And that's where Ms. Wesley comes in."
Chloe looked up from the imaginary circle she had been tracing with her finger to Mr. Farris and Phillip. "Me," she asked at the same time Phillip groaned, "Her?"
"Yes. Chloe made the highest score on the first test. She turns in all her homework on time," Farris said, looking at Phillip who didn't. "And, she pays attention and takes excellent notes. She's perfect for what I have planned."
"And what exactly is that," Phillip asked, looking at his expensive watch. If Farris didn't hurry his trap, he'd be late for practice. "Is ghoul girl going to cast some magic spell on me, make me smart?"
Mr. Farris' eyebrows raised at the mention of ghoul girl, but Chloe just explained his curiosity away. "It's just a term of endearment Phillip and I share," she told the teacher as if she and Phillip had were close. The only reward was Phillip's own look of horror.
"Okay," Mr. Farris said, not really sure if it was something he wanted to get into anyway. "Chloe here will tutor you for the next two weeks. Then, when the next test is given, you will also get the first one, well, one similar to the first one. Then, you can make up that grade."
"I have to take two tests at once," Phillip asked incredulously. "There must be some rule against that," he said.
"No rule. And take it seriously Phillip, because come the end of the first grading quarter and you're failing, you know the consequences."
And those he did. Last year, he had been kept off the baseball team for a couple of weeks because of his grades in French. It had basically killed the team's chance at making the playoffs. Phillip wasn't sure he could afford to disappoint people like that again.
"Can't you just tutor me Farris, I mean, I could make the time somehow," he said, knowing that his schedule was tied up until five, after football practice.
"I leave right away everyday to pick up my own kids from school, Phillip. I know football practice keeps you late, sometimes past five even. But if Chloe would be willing to help, maybe she could tutor you after practice. I'd leave the room open if you needed someplace to study together."
Phillip gave another harsh groan. Studying. And worse, with her.
"I'd do it," Chloe spoke. "I mean, I wouldn't mind.," she ammended, not wanting to sound eager at spending time with Phillip Kiriakis.
"Of course you wouldn't mind! You don't have anything else to do," Phillip threw angrily at her. As if he didn't have enough problems this year, he sure didn't need the added worry of hanging around Chloe. What would his friends think?
"I'm sure Chloe's schedule is very busy with her own studying and socializing Phillip. You should be very glad that she's willing to help. I'm sure the two of you can work out some schedule for times to meet. And just let me know if you'll need the room so I can leave it open when I leave."
"Is this a joke. I mean, early April Fools or something. Can I see my test," Phillip asked, needing to find a way out of this situation. It wasn't news to anyone at Salem High that he and Chloe didn't like each other. He'd rather open his book than spend any un-needed time with her.
"Okay, but it won't change anything," Mr. Farris said as he pulled Phillip's test paper out to reveal the big red score of 53."
"What? Can you get this low on a test," Phillip asked as he looked through the three page test.
"Yes, apparently you can. Take my advice Phillip, let Chloe tutor you. I have to go meet with Mr. Brackin before you leave, but tell me tomorrow in class if you'll need the room. And make sure you have your homework on Monday Phillip."
Phillip just rolled his eyes as Farris walked over to thank Chloe, then left the room.
There was a long silence, both not moving, not speaking, until Chloe got up and walked over to Phillip. "So, do you want to do this or not," she asked, knowing he would rather die than spend any extra time with her.
"Of course I don't want to," Phillip shouted at her. "Why would I even want to breathe the same air as you," he asked her disgusted.
Without another word, Chloe turned and left the room, walking down the empty hallway.
Phillip stood still for a minute, before realizing his mistake. Running out of the classroom, he looked both ways to see where she'd gone, but she wasn't in sight. "She has to be a witch," he muttered as he turned left to go to football practice.
