Dedicated to those of us who still work for a living, RV on weekends and vacations, and dream of the day we can enjoy the RV lifestyle full time.
Fulltiming - Part 2
Questions Fulltimers Should Ask
Obviously, it's very hard to label a fulltimer. Once an interest in pursuing the lifestyle develops, every potential fulltimer should ask himself certain questions:
- Can I handle having no fixed schedule?
- Am I willing to abandon my established routine?
- Can I trade house and yard chores for RV maintenance?
- Can I let go of the security my fixed dwelling provides?
- Am I willing to give up the security of having the same doctor, dentist, barber, hairdresser, mechanic, grocer, mail carrier, neighbors, etc.?
- Do both my spouse and I agree that fulltiming is the lifestyle for us?
- Can I spend long periods together with my partner in close quarters?
- Am I prepared to manage my RV like a home?
- Am I willing to sell or give away my accumulated possessions?
- Should I sell my house?
- Is my spouse my lover and my friend? Do we share enough interests to remain compatible during long periods together?
- Can I trade the availability of long time friends for the opportunity to meet new friends?
If you can confidently answer "yes" to most of these questions, you stand a great chance of successfully participating in the fulltiming lifestyle. If so, an endless stream of benefits awaits you. Many say fulltiming is like being on a permanent vacation. It can allow you to follow the seasons or take the time to explore interesting places in depth. It could be your escape from a hectic, fast-paced job, offering freedom and mobility. You will say good-bye to the packing and unpacking associated with short trips. No more frantic preparation and exhausting recovery normally experienced with vacations. You can travel without the pressure of returning home by a set time. You can relax as you enjoy a simpler, less complicated way of life. Your RV will offer many of the luxuries found in your home, without the yard work! In short, you will be able to go more, do more, and see more.
Almost one million people currently call themselves fulltimers. That's more than the population of many towns and small cities, happily wandering homelessly throughout the country. If you're considering taking the fulltiming plunge, ask yourself one final question, "Will I someday regret saying 'If I had it to do all over again, would I have entered the fulltiming lifestyle earlier'?" If you spend your life waiting for the "right time", unforeseen circumstances could eventually thwart your plans. Many fulltimers have taken years, months, or sometimes just weeks to prepare for their RV odyssey. Only you can decide what would be right for you.
In our next fulltimer primer segment, we explore the best ways to prepare for this adventure of a lifetime.
