We, the Fifth Class pupils of Scoil Aonghusa each interviewed an elderly person in our locality. Most of us chose our grandparents. We learned a lot about childhood long ago both in the country side and in thecity. Life has changed a lot. Here is some of the information they shared with us.
Grainne D.  Aoife M.  Levi C.

“My Granny played tig and ring a ring a rosie.  She walked to school in her bare feet and the roads were very rough.  She had to be in school for half past nine and in school they said ten hail Marys.  At five to three they said ten hail Marys again.  They had no cars but they had bicycles.  They had no electricity or television when she was young.  She helped make the hay with forks and rakes in the summer.  They brought in the hay with a horse and a hay cart.  In the summer it was very hot.  She never went on holidays.  They sometimes went to the seaside on the bus.”

                        Lisa G.

“There was no electricity, no motor bikes and very few bicycles when my grandad was young.  Life was very different.  He helped pick potatoes on the farm.  He was the oldest of nine.  He had to walk to school.  In the summer he went down to his grandad for three weeks.  He kept the ducks out of the corn for his grandad.  He got a few sweets for Christmas and he plucked a dead turkey for the Christmas dinner.”
Rebecca

“My Grandad said that the holidays lasted about six weeks.  During those six  weeks he worked and got two shillings every day for cutting thistles on a farm belonging to Sir Hunt Walsh.  He did extra jobs during the summer.  He loved the Summer and thinks the ones in the past were better”

Amanda

“My granny lived on Meath Street in a tenement house. She  played hopscotch, hide and seek and skipping. Her chores were cleaning the house and helping her mother out at home. On weekends she would go to the local hop (dance). She was the best dancer around. On Christmas Eve she would gather with her family and prepare presents. In those days most people made presents instead of buying them. In summer she would play on the streets with her friends. On Fridays she would visit a place called the Bano run by Guinness breweries. Lady Guinness would assemble all the children in a big hall and she wold give them all buns and milk. She would sing Christian songs with them.

Orla M.

“In the summer Granny stayed at her cousin’s house. Granny helped on the farm feeding the animals and hens. She brought tea and refreshments to the men working at the hay and corn. Granny went to the bog to save the turf for the winter ahead. She missesher neighbours who called to the house to play cards and tell stories. Granny misses the trashing of the corn and the crowds that were there for meals.

“Granny lived in a long thatched house with three bedrooms and a kitchen.  She walked three miles to school every day.  She had a pet goat. Her Mother died when she was small so she left school when she was 14.  She once got a rag doll for Christmas which cost six  pence.

“My nanny said that in her time they had no electricity  and they had to walk to the well to get water.  My nanny worked on the farm and played with the children next door during her summer holidays. My nanny went to school on a horse and cart. She had to go to school in her bare feet. Nanny brought a bottle of cold tea for lunch. She played hop scotch in school.”

Susan

“After school Granny  had to  carry two buckets of water home from the well.  Before she  went to school  she  milked the  cows”.
