Izzy Alcantara broke into the national spotlight last month with an extraordinary game against the White Sox in Chicago. He walked after several balls in the outfield, watched one roll right past him, and just stood in the baseline in the middle of a crucial "run" down. After that historic game, Alcantara was benched for 2 weeks by manager Jimy Williams. The funny part is that he never even pinch-hit or came in as a "defensive replacement" (which is really sad because Brian Daubach was playing outfield that week). Every day Izzy came to the park and just sat in the dugout. Just sat there (which ironically is the same effort he showed in his start). People were wondering why he was not demoted to AAA to make room for a player that Williams would actually play. Well it seems that Izzy was out of options and the Red Sox had to keep him on the major league roster. Now Izzy may be a star someday, and he may not. Nobody knows for sure. However, what we do know is that Izzy Alcantara (a.k.a. Lazy I Can't Try-a) should watch another couple of weeks worth of games before playing again. It is just one game, and you can't crucify a guy for one blunder, but it was three or four blunders in a span of less than 2 hours. After spending 7 years in the minor leagues a little bit more effort can be expected from a guy who finally gets a shot to show off his skills in the majors. If you are a proven player, and you loaf, it's one thing (we don't like it, but we have learned to at least deal with it occasionally). But to be a young, energetic player getting your shot at the big leagues, if you aren't going to try give me a call and I'll come play for you. I can't guarantee I'll get a hit or make every play in the field, but I will at least show that I care about the game and about being on the field.
