Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne

Developer: Publisher: Release Date:
Blizzard Blizzard Jun 24, 2003

The Frozen Throne also has a few new neutral buildings. One of the new buildings is The Goblin Marketplace. Any item that can be found on the map can be bought here. The Goblin Shipyard will allow for sea transport to support all the island missions in the campaign.

There is also another neutral building, The Cantina, where 5 new neutral heroes can be purchased. 3 of the heroes are THE DARK RANGER, THE PANDERAN BREWMASTER and THE NAGA SEA WITCH. The abilities of the Naga Sea Witch and the Panderan Brewmaster haven’t been finalized yet but the Dark Ranger is finished. The Dark Ranger has 3 abilities.

The first ability is Silence and when cast on enemy spellcasters, it prevents them from using their spells.

Black Arrow is the Dark Ranger’s second ability and its similar to Seering Arrow. If a unit is killed while Black Arrow is cast on it, it’ll rise as a skeleton and be controllable by caster. The skeleton lasts only a while before it dies.

Charm allows the Hero to control any unit in the game except for heroes and the units that are immune to spells. The effects are permanent and the creature is yours to control until it gets killed.

Even though there are 5 new mercenary heroes, you’re still limited to 3 heroes per game. Dead mercenary heroes can be resurrected at the altar just like all other heroes.

Blizzard took the suggestions of the players of Warcraft III and made some changes to the interface. You can queue units and upgrades at the same time. You can also queue buildings, set waypoints for units going to a rally point and see creeps settlements on the mini-map as silver dots.

There are also 3 new tilesets to support the new locations that you’ll go to in the campaign. The tilesets are the Sunken Ruins, Icecrown and another one that’s still unknown. The Icecrown was made for the missions in the glacier and look similar to the one in Northrend. The creeps for this tileset will be the Nerubians, Polar bears and Polar Furbogs.

The Sunken Ruins tileset is used in the Night Elf campaign on a chain of islands between Kalimdor and Azeroth. Half the creeps in this tileset are amphibians and can attack on land and water. Creeps in this landscape will include giant Sea Turtles, Sea Giants and the lobster-like Makura.

Work on The Frozen Throne began sometime around November and is scheduled to be released early summer. There’s a lot of expectations in this expansion and Blizzard is sure to met them.
