How we rate

Pyro Studio’s Commandos: Behind Enemy Line was released in June 1998 and instantly became a favorite. Now, Pyro Studio brings us the Commandos sequel, Commandos 2: Men of Courage, updating the sequel while keeping the gameplay that made the original game so popular.

Anyone who played squad-based strategy games like Commandos, Star Trek Team Away and Desperados know how the gameplay goes in Commandos 2. You begin each mission with a small group of soldiers, each specializing in a different skill which you can use to take down enemy soldiers and complete your missions.

Commandos 2 includes 12 missions in a range of 11 rich, highly detailed environments. These environments are based on World War 2 locations such the third Reich or the headquarters of the Japanese Army. You control up to 9 different commandos, killing enemies while trying to complete the missions successfully. Some of the old characters are included along with a few new ones. You can choose anyone from the Green Beret, the sniper and new ones such as the thief and even Whiskey, a dog which can transport papers from 1 location to another. Each character now has an inventory of items they can carry. Once you kill an enemy, you can steal their weapons, uniforms and other things. Some items are specific to certain characters. For example, only the Sapper can plant explosives.

One of the most important changes in the Men of Courage is the new game engine. All the characters in the game are now 3D and the main landscape has been enhanced and can now be rotated in 90 Degrees increments. The environment has also been made more interactive. You can climb poles, swing cables, enter and exit buildings and do more. Building interiors are fully 3D and can be rotated 360 Degrees. The game engine also has day and night effects as well as snow and rain.

The only bad thing about the game is that the mission objectives aren’t clearly described. A conversation between the game characters in the beginning of each mission are supposed to tell you the mission outline. But the goals of the mission or the important places aren’t explained in enough detail, causing lots of frustration while trying to plan your attack. The game doesn’t have a good tutorial either but few missions will be enough to learn the basics of the game.
