Dave Cousins is an excellent musician, but he should stick to music and keep out of local radio. I'm just one of many in the UK who have been shafted by Dave, and have a few scores to settle with him. He's ruined many lives, including mine through sheer incompetence and dirty dealing. Just thought you ought to know....

We have recently seen them on tour all over the UK and think they are GREAT!

Strawbs was one of my favorites in the early 70's and still are. We even used their songs at our wedding in 1992. Saw them about five times from 71 throug 76. Love almost all of their stuff but a special place in my heart for Hero & Heroine. It's one o
those albums that you can put on, then turn over(vinyl) and never want to skip a song. I also loved the Daves together and thought that they sounded best that way. I think Nomadness is underrated and that at the time it was cool of them to try to diverg
from their style. I still listen to them a lot. especially after I've overplayed them awhile and take a rest from them. It's always great to go back and listen to them again when they seem new all over again. I think that Dave's solo "Blue Angel" was a
reat song but I'd Really like to hear it without the grating guitar work. Other bands that I saw from that era were early Genesis(over 20 times - the Lamb concert was a major highlight.) Fairport Convention (with and without Sandy Denny). Gentle Giant. L
ts of others.
keep enjoying the sounds

Thank you for your courteous reply to my inquiries. I am glad to know that Strawbs did go on after 'Nomadness' and I may well give the alblums you mentioned a try, however I still have some questions; Did Cousins remain as the front man? Is he still? This
is important to me because trying to imagine the band without his particular vocal/lyrical/musical style is like trying to imagine YES without Anderson or Led Zep without Plant. Did he do any other solo work besides 'Two Weeks Last Summer'? (Love 'Blue An
el' from this, a song that grows on you more and more each time you hear it.) Does he still tour with the group when they do go out? Do you think it might be possible to find an address to contact Dave by snail mail, maybe c/o A&M or some other record com
any? Do you know what label they are on now? Right then, enough of my asking questions, i had best begin answering some of yours; First off, I have been to the official Strawbs site, but I have not read all
of it. At the time my daughter and I were in the midst of a wild CD hunt, having heard about the UK A&M reissues. I do intend to go back and finish up, maybe this evening. Thank you for sending along the Email address that may or may not be Daves'. I thin
I will give it a try, but not until this weekend. As someone with first hand experience with 'Brits' I can tell you without reservation that they are much more receptive to 'Chat' while 'On Holiday'. As for what equipment I
ave, I'm afraid my collection is pretty sparse at the moment. For many years (late 70's-mid 90's) I ran a small non-profit 4 track studio out of my home, recording for friends, fellow musicians, and the various and sundry bands I either formed myself or d
ifted in and out of. Over the years I have owned tons of stuff; Martin D-28s, Ovation and Goya acoustics, Les Pauls, Fender Strats, Mustangs, and T-casters. Fenders Jazz, Precision, and Rickenbacher 4001 basses. Korg, ARP, Moog, Elka, and Roland synthesiz
rs, as well as various zithers, dulcimers, accordians, banjos, mandolins, and an autoharp. (Ever try to tune a frigging autoharp?) After the breakup of my last band, about three years ago, I more or less 'retired' from the increasingly anaemic Charleston
usic scene and sold off (or, unfortunately, had stolen) the bulk of my equipment. Today I retain my Yamaha 4 track (analog), a Roland drum machine, some Alesis effects units, monitor amps and speakers from the studio, along with my pride and joy Rickenbac
er 360 hollow body electric which I still play through a Sovtek 50W and 2 Cellestion 12"s in a custom cabinet, an old Roland Juno synth which is on its last legs, an even older MicroMoog that only occasionaly can be coaxed to work, a button accordian, and
the aforementioned evil autoharp. (By the way, I don't know where you're located, but if you ever stumble across a working MiniMoog in your travels PLEASE let me know! The modern digital synths are fine, but nothing has the same NUTS as a MiniMooog. I wou
d pay any reasonable price for one in good condition.) My own wants now are pretty modest. Recently Chas Robinson, a super talented, university trained drummer and bassist from my last band, expressed an interest in collaborating on a project and to this
nd I have written some new material, but I'd like to have a new accoustic first, either a six or a twelve. I also find myself drifting more and more back in the softer direction. (Function of aging?) Maybe another Ovation or something similar. Any suggest
ons? Also, my daughter has shown a growing interest in keys, so I may make her a present of a NEW synth (Probably another Roland) on the condition that 'ol Dad gets to play too! Besides those two things I can't think of anything in the equipment line that
I can't really live without. Oh yeah, I almost forgot! In the seventies I was also a big Cat Stevens fan, especially the 'Tea for the Tillerman' and 'Catch Bull at Four' alblums. I loved your story about sending off the four-track demos to that site becau
e, in a way, I once did the same thing with a couple of Strawbs songs. In the 80's I did two solo alblums which came out on the short-lived 'Flying Penguin' label. On the first one I covered 'Out in the Cold' and 'New World', although I dropped the latter
at the last minute. The funny thing was that, although I clearly gave credit in the notes, everyone who heard it (And few they were!) thought it was just another one of my original songs. Needless to say, I got a big kick out of it, especially when I got
nvited on a local radio show and I told the D.J. it was a David Cousins song as he got ready to play it. His reaction was "Dave who?" I said "You know...From Strawbs." Blank stare. Here's this guy who's been on the air for six months with a program devote
to seventies progressive rock and he's never gotten beyond YES and Genesis. Hilarious. The point I'm trying to make is that I think that it's more than okay to cover the artists you respect and have been influenced by. It's said that imitation is the sin
erest form of flattery. C'mon, I knew that my stripped down version, with harmonica subbing for most of the keyboards and VERY minimal production, wasn't as good as the original, but what the hell. I loved the song so much just for itself that i had to gi
e it a go. I'm sure you felt about the same way. Lord, I have jabbered on for long enough. Must go. I have a new Email address at jfw505plt@hotmail.com The old MSN address will still work but this one is easier. Thanks again for the info. Lay a little li

I am 43, also a guitarist, keyboardist, vocalist, and songwriter from Charleston, WV. Like yourself, I have been spreading the word about Strawbs to any and all for nearly three decades now. It is difficult to describe the influence that Dave Cousins, et al
have had on my own writing, playing, and recording, as well as my personal life in general. I first became a fan in the early seventies in a bit of a roundabout way. Into my teens my musical background had been in the classical folk/appalachian tradition
l arena, that is until the night I accepted the invitation of one of my more bohemian girlfriends to attend a concert by YES in a nearby city. I came away knocked out, especially by the unbelievable playing of the keyboardist, Rick Wakeman. I became an in
tant fan. (Still am.) Well, knowing little about english rock and even less about individual musicians, I set out on a sojurn of discovery which led me to a succesion of small, independantly owned, incense drenched upstairs record stores that existed arou
d the city at that time. (How I miss them!) I came away with, among other things, a copy of "From The Witchwood" which I had purchased strictly because of Wakemans' name on the cover. However, from the moment stylus met vinyl Rick was temporarily forgotte
, shoved into the background by the indescribable voice of Cousins. The thing that struck me most was the tremendous emotional range that he possesed, from the lilting and lyrical in 'Glimpse of Heaven' and 'The Sheppards' Song' to the knife-edged cynicis
of 'The Hangman and The Papist' and 'Sheep'. But what really floored me most of all was 'Witchwood' itself. Electric dulcimer leads? Too much! From deep within the recceses of my mountain boy brain a voice began screaming, "That's it! That's the sound! T
at's the direction the music should be going!" I knew right away that I was hooked, that I had seen through some crack in the door a small fragment of the rich, ecclectic mixture that the future would come to know as 'Progressive Rock'. Next day I was bac
in the shops pulling the plum of 'Brave New World'. First off, Blue Weaver totally fooled me on this alblum. With no sleeve notes to speak of I simply assumed that Wakeman had played on these tracks as well. Had I matched up my dates I could have easily
een that this was not the case but with the similarity in style of the two,(sheer speed not withstanding) it never crossed my mind. Secondly, someone needs to mention how nicely this alblum, and the ones that were to follow were put together. If Strawbs a
e the most overlooked progressive rock band of the era then Tom Allom is surely the most overlooked producer. Listen to the way the intricate horn arrangement in 'Heavy Disguise' blends seemlessly and supportively behind Tony Hoopers somewhat manic guitar
and vocal and lifts what would have been a run-of-the-mill folker to an entirely different level. Or heed the regular, hypnotic call of Cousins' 'Queen of Dreams', a composition built completly atop tracks of backwards tape loopings which is nonetheless e
fective and compelling. As someone with experience in the engineering/production fields I can tell you without reservation that practically anyone who can run a tape recorder can lay down tracks. The real trick is to get the proper FEEL into the recording
and have that feel come across to the listener. In my own humble opinion, Tom Allom truely had that talent. Sure, he had some excellent musicians to work with, but so did Eddie Offord and Alan Parsons, ect. To me he ranks right up there along with the res
of the best, as I was to find out to my delight when I got my hands on 'Hero and Heroine', the first Strawbs offering that I actually had to wait on.(Somehow, 'Bursting At The Seams' slipped by me. Never saw a copy in the stores, never heard a single cut
until the nineties. I have it now and I like 'Lay Down' and 'The River' but all in all the alblum seems like a throwback after 'New World'.) 'Hero' ushered in the era of what I consider the penultimate Strawbs lineup. With the departure of Hudson, Ford, a
d Hooper, and the addition of Dave Lambert, Rod Coombes, Chas Cronk, and John Hawken, Cousins finally had the vehicle to push him to the forefront as the heart and soul of the band. The response was breathtaking. Can't believe that you didn't care for thi
alblum at first. Perhaps it was the deliberate way in which it starts out, or maybe the difference in style between Hawken and Lambert and their predecessors, I don't know, but I think you'll agree with me now that there is not a single bad cut on the wh
le thing. From the deep texture of 'Autumn', through the machine gun delivery of 'Hero', the provocative 'Out In The Cold', delicious 'Midnight Sun', on to the deperate balls out rock of 'Round And Round' all smartly meshed together by Messer Allom is har
to beat. Many of my friends and fellow fans consider it the Strawbs best work, and they have a strong argument, but you will not find me in that camp. No, to me the next piece of work, 1975s' 'Ghosts' is the quintisential Strawbs. From the multilayered t
ur de force of the title track, to the single-like 'Lemon Pie', (Number one cruising song of anyone who ever had a blonde girlfriend.) to the stark, desperate landscape of 'The Life Auction', the evocative 'Starshine/Angel Wine and even the much-maligned
Where Do You Go' (Which I'm sure the boys threw in because the rest of the alblum seemed so 'Heavy' that they just had to lighten things up a bit.) all leading up to my favorite of many favorites 'Grace Darling'. It's funny now in retrospect, in March of
75 I was serving in the Air Force, actually in the UK and could not find this alblum in any of the local record shops, an indication of how the bands english following had dropped off at that point I suppose. I finally wound up buying an american copy at
he base exchange. At the time I thought that 'Grace' was merely another one of Cousins' flights of fancy, a powered up love song with a nifty nautical theme in the same vein as the Bee Gees 'Odessa'. It wasn't until the 'Halcyon Days' collection came out
nd I got to read Daves' own
comments that I found out that Grace Darling was a real person and that the song was a tribute to her heroic deed, with this new slant I have a whole new appreciation for her and the tune itself. For me I guess that was the summit, sure I bought 'Nomadnes
' but other than 'Hanging in the Gallery' I thought it was a flop. I think a lot of other fans agreed. After that I more or less lost track of the Strawbs. I didn't see any new releases in the stores and assumed they had gone on their way, however, to thi
day, I still listen to the alblums I have mentioned on a regular basis and they remain one of my all time favorite groups. I am pleased that you decided to create your site and I think it is quite good, one of the better fan sites I have seen. If there i
any way in which I could be of help or if you would just like to hobnob with a fellow fan please feel free to Email. I would be very interested to know what some of the latter alblums sound like (any good?) or if there is an address where I could write t
Dave himself just to say thanks. Hope I haven't taken too much of your time with all this prattling. Thanks, JW

Great page! With all the changes the Strawbs had made throughout the years they still managed to create the most compelling, melodic, and inspiring music-no doubt due to the magical mind of Dave Cousins.I truly wish he'd/they'd come to the NYC area once m

Thanx Mark. I like this site - it is great to know that there are other Strawbs fans out there. I never really listened to the Strawbs till about 2 years ago -- but now I am obsessed! I am a long time Yes fan, but somehow missed this band when they were r
leasing their albums. Juliann

Great site Mark! I am another very devoted Strawbs fan. I met Dave twice and am hoping they will return to the states soon. My opinion is that he is the genius singer/songwriter of the century. The power and beauty of Strawbs music never fades for me.
Anyone visiting this page feel free to email me. My brother who turned me on to Strawbs passed away last October leaving me no one to talk to about them.

Mark: I really enjoyed your site. I've been a Strawbs fan for over 25 years now. I was a music critic back in the 70s, and had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing the band several times back then. I hope if the American release of "Halcyon Days"
s successful, that A&M Records will at least consider American CD releases of some of the old albums (especially since the 'work' of getting them ready for release has already been done in the U.K.

I do not see many comments regarding the 'Hero and
Heroine'album. Absolutely one of my favorites. The booming orchestral into 'Hero & ...' makes this lead quitar player quiver. I wonder if anyone who has the original album has noticed a 'lisp' for lack of a better term on words that end in 'S' on that
album. I first thought it was my phono but a fellow fan said his album sounds the same. It seems like the trebel was turned too high during the recording. I was also wondering if this, what I call, flaw has been corrected in the remastered CD. I see C
NOW has the remastered H&H for $23 - a bit steep don't you think? Still and forever, a great album. The words to Hero and Heroine may be a old school song (from what I read) but the words are mystifying and I believe ring true in so many of our lives...

Isn't John Ford's album "Love is a Highway" amazing?
Apparently Ritchie Blackmore has cited it as one of his very favourite albums of 1998.
I'm impressed with his taste in music.

It's great to see that there are still a few of us left out there that are still into the Strawbs.
I am in total agreement with your comments on the Strawbs. Dave Cousins has the most intense and expressive voice of anyone that I have ever heard. His lyrics go way beyond anyone with the possible exception of the Beatles and Rush.
I have had the pleasure of seeing them in concert on seven different occasions and the concert that is mentioned in Passiac N.J. still ranks as my all time favorite. It was brodcast live that evening on WNEW-FM. If anyone has a copy or would like to c
at I would love for you to get in touch.

Strawbs is definitely one of my favourite bands. YES is my all time favourite band. I have always been amazed by David Cousins ability to write powerful and moving lyrics. I just sent David Cousins a Christmas card that I designed. The design of the c
rd was inspired by the Strawbs lyric "We shall plant seeds of love and we shall harvest peace". I think that "From the Wychwwod" is my favourite album by the band. I really like the influence that Wakeman brought to the band. I am slowly collecting the
atalogue on CD. Most of it I have on vinyl.

Well I have been loyal suporter since Witchwood
came out & remember riding my bike to pick up
Grave New World at record store. The have always
been a cult following group & I am afraid always
will be as it is hard to motivate todays kids on
something that old (I tried with step son) still
the cult is rabid enough (at least in England) to
have cds come out & box set is due in 99 (YEAH) so
keep the faith & keep the support. At least they
are still there & still active. As Dave C said

Great web page!!! Thanks for replying!! Unfortunately most fans still view the Strawbs as a dinosaur band. I , like you ,feel so differently! With the right grass-roots efforts we can get the Strawbs back on the radio and exposed to new generations whic
will result in more CD sales for them. Remember, when they first hit the scene the competition was awesome ans record companies were so much smaller, with smaller promotional budgets; now is the time also, for those still aware of what is currently hot o
top fourty radio, to really push the Strawbs!!! Did you realize that Pearl Jam's Wishlist, is a dead ringer for the style of "Antiques and Curio's"?? The new generation is primed with the current folk music explosion going on to accept the intenscity o
the Strawbs, please stay in touch, Mark, and let's see what we can do via e-mail to expose the Strawbs to a whole new audience. Maybe we will even get a personal thanks and free concert from Mr. Cousins out of this!!! Keep up the great work!! yours Llo

Nice page. Thanks for being a Strawbs fan. When i mention th name Strawbs, lots of people just think that;they were one of those talented but not up to the standarts of music industry type of canten bury groups or something. But, they are the greatest examp
e of a band promised to be having the same fame and fortune that Genesis has (i think more)yet ,simply, not aided by destiny. In addition to the talents of Lambert(my all time best gtr player),Chas Cronk and Rod Coombes were definetely more than Lee&Peart o
Porcaro&Porcaro..Life sucks ,in my humble point of view.. All the best.
