Austrian day
25 April 2002
It was a pleasure to invite to S.T.R.S. Michaela Gigerl from Austria. Currently lecturing at Bristol University, she has an enthusiasm for the German language and her Austrian roots which she endeavoured to share with us. Year 9 groups competed to assemble a map of Austria, identify famous Austrians and buildings and match Austrian and German words. The cookery room was a hive of activity as Year 8 pupils assembled different flavours of "Topfencreme" (Quark based dessert) and Year 13 were treated to an illustrated tour of Austria with the Austrian national anthem as a point of reference. Year 10 pupils raced to complete a dictation on aspects of Austrian life and through a board game familiarized themselves with Vienna, its culture and its history.
A number of pupils sampled the Sauerkraut and Frankfurter on offer in the canteen, others entered the quiz on Austria. History pupils were able to discuss the "Anschluss" and Second World War with Michaela. Nothing so strenuous for the staff. They enjoyed the "Mohnkuchen" (poppy seed cake) and Apfelstrudel in the staffroom.
