Chinese Culture and games
Pupils in this workshop were given a brief history of
the Chinese Lunar calendar, which also included learning some Chinese greetings.
Pupils
identified the 12 animals of the calendar branches and learnt the basic characteristics
of these animals. An attempt to demonstrate how the calendar
works using pupils was great fun and hopefully contributed to their understanding.
The session finished with the lighting of two Chinese calendars, which pupils
paraded around the room in imitation of the custom on the last day of the Spring
Festival and on Mid-Autumn day, the day of the full moon. On these days Chinese
children parade their Chinese lanterns through the streets, where the shapes,
colours and paintings are admired. Our thanks to Miss Jia Hao for taking this
workshop.
